The Taiwanese company has two motherboards for Skylake processors that enable even overclocking of Core CPU versions that do not belong to the family K. All these thanks to an external clock generator.
In recent months, some manufacturers of motherboards for Intel Core family of processors have Skylake bios versions made available that can allow Overlock of Intel processors outside the K series. In this way it was possible for owners of Intel core processors not K and not equipped with a frequency multiplier unlocked upwards, increasing the basic clock frequency (BCLK) significantly compared to the 100 MHz default.
Intel stepped in blocking this possibility in recent weeks, implementing a microcode update in which does not allow these processors to be overclocked with these specific versions of bios. One of the companies that has most pushed for this feature is the Taiwanese ASRock, which these days has two new Fatal1ty family of cards that bring in vogue this feature but in this case without any special versions of the bios.
The Fatal1ty H170 Performance/Hyper and Fatal1ty B150 Gaming, based respectively on the H170 Intel chipset and Intel B150, using a specific clock generator mounted on the PCB which bypasses the one present in the processor, and that in this way allows you to easily take action on the frequency of BCLK going well beyond the 100 MHz default even with CPU not the K family.
Both cards are based on the same PCB, differing among themselves only for the chipset used. ASRock specifies how it is possible to increase the basic clock frequency in steps of 0.0625 MHz for a time thanks to this external clock generator to the processor.
It will be interesting to observe at this point if that ASRock will be an isolated action or followed by other manufacturers specialize in motherboards for the enthusiast products. But most of all what will be the reaction of Intel, the paper is not happy that its K-series processors can be overclocked easily.
