Microsoft Surface 2 – Quick Review
The successor to the company’s first tablet, the Microsoft Surface 2 officially launched in New York a month earlier. Today, thanks for the courtesy of Microsoft, after several weeks of testing are able to provide my impressions on this small and powerful tablet with the new operating system update designed and created for the Windows RT 8.1 tablet. Microsoft Surface 2 – Design
Picking up the Microsoft Surface 2, you become aware of the care that Microsoft has put into this device. With a stylish design, choice of materials plays in his favor. The body of this tablet is made of a special magnesium alloy known as VaporMg, which makes the device sturdy yet lightweight. The total weight of the device is only 676 gr.
The Microsoft Surface 2 is also equipped with a special feature that distinguishes it from other devices on the market: a practical support integrated two-position that allows you to quickly change the angle of the display 24 and 40 degrees. This solution is particularly useful as it allows to better orient the position of the Surface 2 depending on the working plane and of our location. The opening of the support is facilitated by a groove on the edge of the deck.
As for the size, the Surface 2 size 275 x 173 mm and is just 8.9 mm thick. These measures, combined with low weight, allow the Microsoft tablet to be moved easily, both inside and outside the home.
Microsoft Surface 2 – Hardware Features
Let us now look more closely at the hardware features of the Microsoft Surface 2. Considering that we are dealing with a tablet, the technical specifications of this device are very respectable. Behind the dazzling display 10.6 ” (16:9) with a resolution of 1920 × 1080 we find a processor NVIDIA Tegra 4 Quad Core 1.7 GHz and 2 GB of RAM.
For the storage space, you can choose between 32 and 64 GB, both the configuration can be expanded thanks to the microSD slot. Staying on the theme ” gates ” along the edge of Surface 2 are also a USB 3.0 port entry for 3.5 mm jack. It also a HD video output which to be used, it needs a special accessory sold separately.
Regarding the audio and video, the Microsoft Surface 2 is equipped with :
- 3.5-megapixel front camera.
- 5.0 megapixel rear camera.
- Two microphones.
- Stereo speakers.
A small particularity of the rear camera is his potion: being slightly inclined with respect to the side on which it is mounted, when the use is together with the integrated support this will be perfectly perpendicular with the work plane.
The integrated battery Microsoft Surface 2 provides a range of about 10 hours, and 7-15 days with an inactive device. This according to reports from Microsoft. Personally, during this trial period, for the use that I did (I would call a medium). I can only confirm what has been described by the Redmond company.
In this review I will touch briefly on the operating system used by the Microsoft Surface 2 : Windows RT 8.1. For those who still do not know, Windows RT has a slightly limited version of Windows 8, because it is designed specifically for tablets.
Unlike the ” big brother ” Windows RT is not able to read the classics executable files (. exe) to install an application must necessarily resort to the Windows Store. From what I have seen personally the daily use of Windows RT is not at all problematic, but the lack of many basic applications or other officers certainly makes itself felt.
Our Opinion
Thanks to its light weight and its features that make it much more like a laptop, the Surface 2 is definitely a great tablet. Unfortunately, currently, Windows RT penalizes in part the capacity. Before buying you must consider very well the type of use that it will.
