Smartphones of the near future with ever-longer screen
2 of 3 smartphones that will be sold in the third quarter of 2018 will be screen-based with a ratio of 18: 9 or even more driven, confirming a clear market trend towards ever longer displays.
The number of smartphones that use a screen with an 18: 9 ratio between the two sides continues to increase. This is very evident to fans looking at the announcements of new products made by various companies, but also some market analyzes such as that of IHS Markit clearly confirm this new direction.
Models with an 18:9 screen, even pushing for solutions with higher ratios such as those of 18.5:9 and 19.5:9, will represent 66% of smartphones sold during the third quarter of 2018. By way of compared to the same period last year, around 10% of smartphones sold were equipped with this type of screen.
This type of screen was initially developed only with AMOLED panels, for this reason intended only for higher-end smartphones. Technological developments have allowed us to develop such screens with TFT LCD technology, expanding their adoption even in smartphones with a cheaper price positioning.
The forecasts are an increasingly massive adoption of screens with ratios higher than the traditional 16: 9 a bit in all market segments. This approach, combined with the use of the so-called notch to integrate sensors and cameras without using a more or less thick frame, will lead to smartphones with longer and longer screens and with a frontal area devoid of other elements as far as possible.
