Samsung Display gets certified for the first indestructible display
No dates have yet been announced for volume production, but the intended use will obviously be smartphones. In a video is taken to hammer without reporting damage.
Samsung Display could be the first company able to bring a truly indestructible display to the market. The Underwriters Laboratories have certified a Samsung OLED panel, capable of surviving military rank restraint tests without reporting damage. Such as the fall, for 26 times consevutive, from a height of 1.2 meters and exposure to temperatures from 71°C to -32°C. The screen also survived a 1.8 meter drop test without reporting any bruising.
In all tests, the display continued to operate without any uncertainty. Samsung Display has made available for a video of the screen, which shows how the plastic cover behaves compared to a traditional glass panel. Furthermore, in the video, the display is repeatedly hammered without any damage. Key element of its robustness is the flexible setting with an indestructible substrate and a plastic surface window that adheres to the panel.
The display was made with the main purpose of use in smartphones, but Samsung does not rule out other uses, such as gaming consoles, cars, tablets and possibly military devices. However, the company has not yet indicated a possible time window for volume production, and for the arrival on the market, and should be considered as a longer-term project. Let’s not expect to see it on the next Samsung home news expected for the IFA in Berlin.
