Qualcomm Snapdragon Wear 3100: New architecture for ultra-low power consumption
Qualcomm presents the new Snapdragon Wear 3100 platform suitable for future smartwatches that promises ultra-low power consumption.
Qualcomm presented the Snapdragon Wear 3100, based on a new architecture that will allow lower energy consumption than in the past. This architecture features the high-performance quad-core A7 processors, the high-efficiency integrated DSP and a new ultra-low-power co-processor that work together to extend battery life.
The new Qualcomm QCC1110 coprocessor was designed from the ground up and is the heart of the Snapdragon Wear 3100 platform. It is approximately 21mm² in size, is optimized for ultra-low power operation and serves as a complement to the main processor, redefining audio, the display and sensor experiences for next-generation smartwatches. It also integrates a deep learning engine for customized workloads.
The Snapdragon Wear 3100 platform includes a new wearable power management subsystem (PMW3100) to support lower power and higher integration. This processor is designed to help reduce power consumption in areas such as low-power modes, GPS charging, minute / second clock updates, sensor processing, Wi-Fi / Bluetooth, MP3 playback and voice calls. This translates into improvements in battery life from 4 to 12 hours during the day of use compared to the previous platform.
Qualcomm, for the realization of this platform, has collaborated with Google in order to optimize the system also on the software side; all this will offer a rich interactive mode, new personalized experiences and support for a long battery life.
The first customers who will have the chance to mount the new processor on their devices are Fossil Group, Louis Vuitton and Montblanc. These companies are already working to bring smartwatches to a diverse group of consumers, including lifestyle sports users, fashion travelers and those looking for a high-end luxury smart watch.
The Snapdragon Wear 3100 platform is available in three variants: Bluetooth Smartwatch and Wi-Fi with tethering, GPS-based tethered Smartwatches and Smartwatch connected to 4G LTE. The platform is in mass production and is now shipping to Qualcomm partners.
