Oculus Quest: The first all-in-one 6DOF VR system
At the San Jose Convention Center was held Oculus Connect 5, the new edition of the event with which Oculus annually updates fans about the state of the evolution of VR. Mark Zuckerberg revealed Oculus Quest.
Oculus Quest is a sort of evolution of Oculus Go, the solution developed by Facebook together with Xiaomi that brought VR to a new level in terms of ease of use and consistency. Like Oculus Go, the new viewer is equipped with the hardware to process images autonomously and does not require a PC (you cannot even connect to it) and, unlike its predecessor, it boasts 6 degrees of freedom instead of 3 degrees of freedom. The viewer is based on the platform previously known as Santa Cruz.
Oculus Insight
It is not the only improvement of Oculus Quest compared to the past, because the new viewer is based on an innovative system that uses four ultra wide-angle sensors and computer vision algorithms to track the exact position in real time without external sensors. This will give a greater sense of immersion, presence and mobility, as well as the possibility of going beyond the size of the room. The new tracking technology has been called Oculus Insight.
Guardian
To this is added the technology that Oculus defines Guardian: it is a system that perceives the proximity of walls and other obstacles, forwarding a notification to the user. When you get too close to an obstacle, a blue grid is displayed that conveys the user’s need to move backwards.
Oculus Touch
The other big improvement concerns the controllers. The new Touch controllers are more intuitive and with redesigned sensors to better detect the movements and boundaries of the game space. They allow a faithful reproduction of the movements of each finger in virtual reality, so that it is possible to collect objects and operate any type of function.
Basically, the new viewer adapts the VR experience to the available dimensions in real space and faithfully reproduces the user’s hands.
In addition, all the experiences for Oculus Go will also work on Quest, and this will also be true for many experiences for Rift such as Robo Recall, The Climb and Moss.
Specifications
Oculus Quest includes the best optics of the category also present in Oculus Go, with a display resolution of 1,600×1,440 per eye. It also incorporates lens spacing adjustment to help maximize visual comfort. Integrated audio has also been improved to deliver engaging, high-quality sound with even deeper bass.
The Oculus team did not disclose information about the hardware specifications of Oculus Quest, beyond the 6 degrees of freedom and support for new Insight and Guardian technologies. Presumably this is an update compared to the SoC of Oculus Go, or Qualcomm Snapdragon 821. You could assume the use of Snapdragon 835 or Snapdragon 845 with 4 GB of RAM, but you have to wait for official confirmation of Oculus to have certainties about.
In the plans of the producer acquired by Facebook, Oculus Go remains the easiest and cheapest way to get into VR, while Oculus Rift uses the power of its PC to go beyond the limits of the possible. Thanks to Oculus Quest, you can combine the best of both worlds and accommodate even more people in the VR community.
Price and date of issue
Oculus Quest will be launched in the spring of 2019 for $399. Oculus Quest will be launched in the spring of 2019 for $399. The new viewer will be compatible with 6DOF titles originally created for Oculus Rift.
Rift Platform
Oculus Quest is not the only announcement of the Oculus Connect 5: it has talked about many other technologies and experiences for virtual reality. Starting from Rift Core 2.0, which comes out of the Beta version. The new Rift platform includes Home, a customizable space to share with friends, and Dash, a new user interface that brings with it VR applications and PC displays through VR.
The updated Rift platform offers the new Espressive Avatars, which feature simulated eye and mouth movements and subtle micro-expressions. The end result is a mixture of behavioral science and animation that will make you feel like you’re really there with others. The Avatars Expressive will be available to all developers through the Avatar SDK later this year.
In addition, developers will be able to create custom items for developers, such as animated objects, sculptures, trophies and avatar clothing. You can show these new items with pride, sharing them with friends. The Custom Developer Item pipeline will be open to all developers during the fall.
Oculus Mobile App for Rift users
From now on, Rift users can use the Oculus mobile application to discover events, connect with friends, visit the Store and install new games directly on the PC. The Oculus mobile app is available on iOS and Android.
Hybrid Applications
Hybrid applications allow desktop software developers to add a VR mode to improve productivity in existing workflows without the need for a native VR application or complete software rewriting.
Vader Immortal: A Star Wars VR Series for Oculus Quest
As for the experiences, it is mandatory to start with the new content dedicated to Darh Vader. ILMxLAB and the immersive entertainment division of Lucasfilm have announced an experience dedicated to the Star Wars universe, divided into three parts, entitled Vader Immortal: A Star Wars VR Series.
Written by David S. Goyer, the first episode will be launched with Oculus Quest in 2019.
