Samsung announces the first 15.6-inch 4K OLED display for laptops
The South Korean giant showed its first 15.6 ” OLED display at 4K resolution, naturally oriented towards the world of laptops.
Samsung has been out for some time now on the OLED TV market, but continues to invest a lot in technology. The OLED is still today one of the flagships of its smartphone line-up, and also supplies third-party manufacturers with its own panels (including Apple).
Furthermore, we have recently seen some OLED notebooks, and Samsung wants to make the technology even more widespread with a 15.6″ 4K Ultra HD panel that will be made available to third party OEM.
According to the Koreans the newly announced and shown to the public is the first 15.6″ OLED panel at 4K resolution, and is aimed at high-resolution gaming, graphic design or simple video playback. very high, including a very high-contrast ratio, typical of OLED panels, optimal color fidelity, compatibility with HDR standards, support for a wide color gamut, and optimal visibility even outdoors.
From the first widespread images, it is also possible to notice that the new panel can be inserted inside the body of a traditional laptop using frames with extremely reduced dimensions, especially on three of the four sides. The remainder, which usually contains the electronic part, remains very compact compared to other solutions adopted by the competition, with an industrial design by Samsung that achieves excellence.
According to the technical specifications released, Samsung has declared a brightness from 0.0005 to 600 nits and a dynamic contrast ratio of 120.000:1. The comparison with the LCD, according to Samsung, is merciless: the blacks appear on this panel 200 times darker, and at the same time the whites the double brighter. The OLED panel supports 34 million colors and is optimized to cover the entire DCI-P3 HDR gamut, with reduced blue-light emissions.
The panel also falls within the DisplayHDR TrueBlack specifications, and will be produced in volumes starting next month. Once the production of the 15.6-inch OLED panel at 4K resolution will be started, we should not wait a long time to see it integrated into the solutions of the business partners, although it will obviously be confined to the higher-priced models.
