Windows 7 is running out: Microsoft will soon start alerting users
Microsoft will launch a Windows 7 notification campaign to remind users that support is about to end. The company has stated that the messages will not be aggressive.
Microsoft will terminate Windows 7 support starting January 14, 2020 and is planning to launch a notification action for users who still use it, with the operation expected to start as early as next April. The end of the support means that Windows 7 and Office 2010 will no longer receive security updates, thus becoming vulnerable to all the bugs that will be discovered later.
It is clear that everything translates into the need to update systems that still use the old software to the more modern and still supported versions, such as Windows 10 and Office 365. The notification will not mention Windows 10, but will remember that the end is approaching Windows 7 support. The link to the official Microsoft website will appear in the message, a page that will still recommend upgrading to Windows 10.
Matt Barlow from the Windows team explained: ” Starting next month, if you still use Windows 7 you might notice a notification on your PC. This is a reminder that you will probably see a few times during 2019 “. It seems that Microsoft has learned its lesson with Windows 10, and the new notification action will be less aggressive and will allow you to select an option to block subsequent alerts.
The company has announced that the warning will appear only ” a few times ” over the next 10 months, and the action will be blocked once support is completed in 2020. To date, notices are not ready on the stylistic level, and Microsoft will reveal its features only once the campaign is launched. The reason is simple: the company does not want to allow any attackers to recreate their appearance to use any warnings for malicious purposes.
The notifications will not be very different from those that Windows 7 users have received in recent years to upgrade to Windows 10 for free and, of course, it will be clear that they are spread by Microsoft. Windows 10 has recently surpassed ” 7 ” recently in terms of market shares, and today it is installed on 800 million devices. It is about to reach 1 billion, as planned at launch, albeit with a little delay.
The ceased support of Windows 7 should allow the new platform to accelerate the growth towards the billion, a target that Microsoft had set for the first three years after the commercial debut.
