Although the security of the infrastructure in hybrid cloud contexts is guaranteed by the service provider, its management should not be underestimated. Data security remains among the duties of the company that owns it.

But doing it is more complex than it is to say, especially since many security solutions have yet to adapt to new models. Bitdefender proposes a reflection on what are the criteria for choosing a good security solution in a hybrid cloud environment.

The company draws up a list of five points that go to collect the main critical issues that currently exist in making a hybrid cloud environment secure.

The first is that of the balance between protection and compliance with regulations: although the rules establish principles, the speed with which the attacks evolve means that those responsible for security and IT must go beyond the rules to ensure the robustness of the system.

It is essential that companies build a defense capable of slowing down the attackers as much as possible, making it easier to identify (and stop) attacks.

In second place comes the integration of security solutions, which must deal with different environments. Managers must rely on solutions able to guarantee the defense of both on-site (on premise) and cloud environments.

This minimizes the risk of compromising performance (with solutions not optimized for one or the other environment) or security (due to the lack of integration and the additional difficulty of management).

This leads to thinking about the next point, namely the visibility on the infrastructure and its control. Without a specific solution, we run the risk of not having visibility on the entirety of the infrastructure, and this leads to the impossibility of having it under control and not being able to guarantee its safety.

It is important to be able to automate the detection of virtual machines in order to be able to protect them effectively: when these are implemented, they must be protected immediately and automatically, with the same rules already used for the rest of the infrastructure.

These two points mean that it is not possible to intervene in human error, which is inevitable in those cases where there is no policy for automatically applying the rules within the corporate infrastructure.

These points constitute an important starting point for reflection on some of the main issues that companies that face the transition to the hybrid cloud must consider when they approach the safety of their systems. The risk is to expose oneself to attacks and, consequently, to loss of data, money and credibility.
