Apple, Old MacBook Pro at risk of overheating: The official recall
Apple has announced the launch of a recall program involving some 15″ MacBook Pro with Retina displays marketed between 2015 and 2017.
Apple has announced a recall program for ” a limited number of 15-inch MacBook Pro units ” with Retina display. The models involved in the campaign were sold between September 2015 and February 2017, and include defective batteries that could overheat the system, to the point of catching fire in the worst cases.
Whoever owns one of the units involved in the recall (identifiable by serial number) should stop using the system until the battery is replaced with a unit without a defect.
My MacBook Pro exploded today during normal use. No injuries, luckily. Some damage to the house. Could have been worse – good thing I wasn’t on a plane.

The company points out that the affected models are only the 15″ MacBook Pro of 2015, and the problem is not present on any of the previous or subsequent models. Anyone who verified the suitability of their unit can go to an Apple Store or supplier Apple authorized after making an appointment, or requesting a repair with shipping via e-mail, in any case the computers involved will be taken to an Apple Repair Center, and the repair service could take from one to two weeks.
All operations that will be performed on the systems (mainly battery replacement) will be performed free of charge. In recent weeks, a video of an almost burning MacBook Pro has been around the web through Twitter and Reddit platforms. It was a 15″ MacBook Pro with Retina display, and indeed this video may have brought Apple to the recall route.
We don’t know how many units are involved to check if your MacBook is safe Apple provides a convenient tool on the official website.
