How to add fonts to use on Gimp
When dealing with graphics, various software designed specifically for this type of work is used. In addition to the classic Photoshop, the most popular editor of recent years, GIMP can be used.
The latter is a totally free and extremely intuitive program that allows us to carry out many projects on a professional level. Every graphic work worthy of respect involves the use of fonts, that is the characters useful to create a text. Very often the default fonts offered by Windows fail to satisfy all the user’s needs in terms of quality.
For this small obstacle, there is a really simple solution. Just install new fonts and use them even in editing programs like Gimp. In this way, we will be able to improve the appearance of any graphic work quickly and effectively.
Search for fonts on the Internet
The first step to add new fonts to use on Gimp is to search for new characters. We can do a rather thorough search and download an unlimited number of alphabets. In this way, we will enrich our Windows library, and we will certainly have a wider choice. To find new fonts, we can reach a wide range of sites.
Thanks to them, we have the opportunity to find high-quality packages. Some of them are totally free, but there are many others that must be purchased instead. It’s up to us to choose between a free or a paid solution. To save a little, let’s try to look for some free fonts first.
One of the best sites to consult is ” Abstract Fonts “, and can be reached by going to http://www.abstractfonts.com/. Here we can choose between multiple alternatives. If we do not find what we are looking for, go to https://www.dafont.com/. Here too we will find ourselves before a vast archive of free characters.
Download the fonts and move them to the Windows folder
After we have found all the fonts to add and use with Gimp, it’s time to download. We choose a pack of characters at a time and click on the appropriate button to download it. We will find the files in the Windows ” Download ” folder. Once you have downloaded the zip file containing the font we prefer, this must be extracted into a new folder to be named as ” nuova_font “.
We are careful to save fonts that are graphically harmonious when compared to the basic characters we use in our project on Gimp. We can try them one by one as soon as we transfer them to the Windows system folder.
To do this, open the C:\ drive and click on the ” Windows ” folder. We will find a subfolder entitled ” Fonts “, in which we will move the new characters using the ” copy ” and ” paste ” commands. To install the new fonts, we can use a second system. Let’s see what it is.
Install the fonts from the control panel and start Gimp
To install the new fonts for use with Gimp, we can access the Windows Control Panel. Let’s get into this utility of our computer by clicking on ” Start ” and then on ” Control Panel “. Let’s click on the ” Appearance and Personalization ” tab, and then on ” Characters “, ie the last item in the list. To install the fonts, all we have to do is drag them to the window that we are displaying. After making all the downloaded fonts active, we can start Gimp and open our graphic project.
The writing is added by simply clicking on ” Text Tool “. We should find all the characters, default and new, in the list that opens in the Gimp screen. At that point, we will be able to work on our file and save it once satisfied with the font selected by us.
If we wish, we can employ more than one character, but it depends on the work we are doing. An ad hoc graphic project involves the use of up to two different fonts. This in order not to undermine the harmony of the whole work, which follows very precise rules in terms of layout and graphic settings.
Note :
- Perform several tests with different characters, until you find the most suitable one.
- Save your work to avoid losing progress if the program crashes.
