Wi-Fi 6, Mass adoption begins: The Alliance announces the certification program

Wi-Fi 6 or 802.11ax is the new connectivity standard already supported by the first smartphones that allows you to embrace the modern needs of the Smart Home. Here are all the news.

The Wi-Fi Alliance has officially started the ” certification program ” for Wi-Fi 6, an operation that has given the green light to the technology to spread on a large scale. The Wi-Fi 6 certification program aims to verify the interoperability of the features of each individual IEEE 802.11ax device, making sure that it works as expected, even in performance terms, and that it is compatible with other products adhering to the standard.

The program does not start the marketing of Wi-Fi 6 products, as the first ” ax ” peripherals have already been on the market for several months. The test laboratories will have to make sure, that the first devices marketed are consistent with the specifications of the standard, to then activate themselves in order to verify the suitability of all the products that will aim to have Wi-Fi 6 certification.

Among these access points, routers and clients of all kinds, such as smartphones, for example, the first to receive certification, and the only one currently available with Wi-Fi 6 supports, is Galaxy Note 10.

But why take an interest in Wi-Fi 6?

The IEEE 802.11ax standard is not just a mere advancement in terms of performance, the topic on which the latest wireless technology upgrades have focused. Instead, it focuses on improving the user experience in shared environments: the maximum supported throughput is 2.54Gbps, while it dramatically improves spectral efficiency compared to the ac standard. A speech similar in some ways to 5G compared to 4G.

The new technology also exploits several features, such as OFDMA (Orthogonal Frequency-Division Multiple Access), the mandatory MU-MIMO (condition already present also on Wi-Fi 5 Wave 2), 160 MHz channels, Target Wake Time (TWT), all features that aim not only to increase performance, but also and above all to reduce consumption and access latency in the presence of a large number of devices.

All Wi-Fi 6 devices will have the obligation to support the WPA3 security protocol, 1024-QAM modulation technology and beamforming of the transmissions in order to manage the data to be disseminated efficiently in the environment. Below is a list of adapters, chipsets and access points already Wi-Fi 6 certified, to which you can add Samsung Galaxy Note 10.
