Dyson Lightcycle Morph: The lamp that transforms itself by changing the lighting
It adapts the lighting automatically according to the natural lighting and the context in which it is used: Lightcycle Morph is the Dyson range of lamps that transforms according to the needs of the home user.
For some time, the Dyson brand has made itself known on the market with its suction solutions, both flush and without, based on a cyclonic system. The operating logic does not foresee that the sucked dirt ends up in a collection bag, but that through a cyclonic filter is collected in a special container.
The Dyson brand is also known for ventilation systems, not based on traditional fans but Air Multiplier technology: the air is sucked by an impeller inside the device, which then pushes it through an opening with a circular crown geometry to increase its speed.
More recently, the company has gone into the lighting sector with Lightcycle, a table model based on LED technology that manages the light intensity according to the environmental conditions and the type of activity that is carried out under lighting.
With an event in Milan, Dyson announced Lightcycle Morph, a new evolution of its lighting system. The name Morph summarizes the ability of this product to change, adapting to the different needs of use, exploiting for this its 360 ° maneuverability, in these ways:
- Indirect light: The intelligent optical head rotates 360° to make light reflect from walls, floors, and ceilings. The lamp operates in this way as diffused light that illuminates the environment, directing the beam where we want it to be aimed.
- Work lamp: this mode creates intense and targeted lighting for carrying out work, hobbies, applying make-up, and performing complex tasks.
- Indoor light: Creates a targeted light, highlighting artistic effects, colors, and decorative elements. The ” 3-Point Revolve ” movement allows you to position the lamp with extreme precision.
- Ambient light: in this mode, the lamp is closed in the aluminum support structure, illuminating the central body to create a comfortable orange-colored effect. It is designed for the evening hours, with reduced blue.
To obtain this flexibility of use, Dyson intervened both on the design and the lighting part. The first provides an aluminum body with a tilting structure that allows you to position the light source close to what we want to illuminate. Not only that: the lamp block can rotate 360 degrees to be turned towards the area we want to be hit by the light beam.
To make up the lighting part, we find in the structure 3 LED with warm light and as many with cold light, whose operation is constantly governed by Dyson’s proprietary algorithm, Dailight Tracking, which takes into account the environmental conditions and the natural light of the place where we are located to provide lighting with the ideal color temperature.
There are two references to the world of consumer electronics and information technology in Lightcycle Morph: the first is the presence of a USB-C port at the base of the lamp, with which to be able to recharge mobile devices.
The second is the use of a heat pipe-based LED heat dissipation system, thanks to which heat is transferred away from the LED, thus avoiding that their overheating leads to a change in the color temperature of the light beam emitted. An infrared motion sensor turns the light on when you approach it and turns it off if no one is in its vicinity for five minutes, thus helping to save energy.
The interaction with an APP, accessible from a smartphone or tablet, allows you to configure Lightcycle Morph in different ways.
- Studio mode exceeds the recommended light levels for the study and allows you to adjust the color temperature throughout the day.
- Relax mode emits a warmer light at low intensity, but still sufficient for reading. Thanks to the Age Adjust function and the Dyson Link app, the light output adapts to the age of those who use it: those who are older typically need a greater amount of brightness than a young person.
- Boost mode is designed for activities that require more brightness for a limited period, emitting brighter light and making the color temperature cooler at 20-minute intervals.
- Alarm Mode, the user can set the lamp to come on at the time he wishes to wake up and gradually increase its brightness to create a more natural awakening atmosphere.
- Night mode is designed for evening use: it deactivates the motion sensor of the lamp so that the light does not turn on if the user moves during sleep. In addition, it reduces the brightness and color temperature to a minimum, so as not to bother if the lamp is placed on the bedside table and turned on during the night, while the room is in the dark.
- Away mode, the lamp turns on and off at set times to simulate the presence of people in the house, thus acting as a safety light.
More generally, using the data of millions of satellite detections of light conditions in the Earth’s atmosphere at different times of the day, a 32-bit microprocessor integrated with the Dyson Lightcycle Morph lamp constantly interprets these data on daylight, communicating them to the driver optical. The latter powers the 3 warm light LED, and the 3 cold light LED, which work together to simulate the color temperatures of daylight between 2,700 and 6,500 degrees Kelvin.
