Fractal Define 7 and 7 XL, new cases for those who want an elegant computer
Fractal Design presented the Define 7 chassis line. Available in two versions, these houses aim to combine an elegant appearance without giving up the possibility of integrating high-performance platforms, especially in the XL variant.
The Swedish company Fractal Design has announced the new line of Define 7 Case: squared, elegant lines, brushed aluminum and lots of space for hardware, whether you opt for the Define 7 or the Define 7 XL.
The first is 547 x 240 x 475 mm (length x width x height), while the second is longer and taller (604 x 240 x 566 mm). These characteristics are consequently reflected in the weight, equal to 13.49 kilograms in the first case and a good 16.53 kilograms in the second.
The differences on the technical front are evident, with Define 7, which allows the installation of platforms in E-ATX (max 285 mm), ATX, mATX, and mITX format. In contrast, on the Define 7 XL, there are greater freedoms, without limits as far as concerns the E-ATX platform and extended support to EE-ATX, SSI-CEB, and SSI-EEB.
On the storage side (2.5 and 3.5 inches), the Define 7 has 14 positions in total, which become 18 on the XL model. On the more compact model, there is a 5.25-inch slot that allows the installation of a Blu-Ray player or other controllers, while the Define 7 XL has two slots of this kind. All in all, a countertrend choice compared to many competitors. The expansion slots are 7+2 on the first and 9+3 on the second.
Going to the aspects in common between the two versions, here is the part of the front ports, with a USB 3.1 Gen 2 Types-C, two USB 3.0, two USB 2.0, the audio jack, and the power and reset buttons. The possibility of installing an ATX power supply is also common.
On the cooling front, the Define 7 XL has two positions for extra fans (11 x 120 mm instead of 9). It is good to know that the Fractal factory installs two Dynamic X2 GP-14 fans on the front and one fan on the rear. There are also two dust filters on the front and one along the bottom.
The Define 7 allows to install video cards up to 315 mm long with the hard disk cage in position or up to 491 mm (without a front fan, otherwise 467 mm), the XL allows instead of the insertion of GPU up to 359 mm or, without disc cage, 549 mm (524 mm in the presence of a front fan).
It is possible to install a CPU heatsink with a height of up to 185 mm in both cases, but if you prefer liquid systems in Define 7 you have space for a 360/280 mm radiator in the front, a 360/420 mm radiator in the upper one, one 120 mm in the rear and finally 240/280 mm on the bottom. On the Define 7 XL, it is possible to go up to a 480 mm radiator both on the front and on the top.
Of these houses, there are variants with closed sidewalls or with tempered glass on the left, transparent or darkened. The company also makes available for an accessory that allows you to convert the unused positions for the fans in order to mount a hard disk or SSD – two included with the Define 7 XL.
