Vivaldi: The new browser Opera former is for experienced users
Jon von Tetzchner is the man behind Vivaldi, a new browser that incorporates some aspects of Opera. Maybe because von Tetzchner was the co-founder of Opera and CEO of the company?
Vivaldi is the new web browser announced by former CEO and co-founder of Opera, Jon von Tetzchner. Already available on Windows, Mac and Linux in the form of ” Tech Preview “, the new software is based on Chromium and takes some of its features from Opera, as the gesture via mouse and interface ” speed dial “, which provides access quickly to favorite websites when a new tab.
But there are new. The most important area of the interface is on the system of grouping the tab: these can be combined within a single space in order to facilitate navigation between pages open. A useful feature if you have the habit of keeping open multiple sites simultaneously. Vivaldi also lets you jot down information seasoned screenshots within the same browser, to issue commands via textual codes and access a mail client directly integrated into the browser.
Jon von Tetzchner had left in Opera 2011 after having co-founded in 1995. It reappeared in the scenes information last year, with Vivaldi. So it was a sort of forum for the old and no longer existing community site of Opera. The former CEO of Opera had recently revealed to TechCrunch to be working on a ” browser for friends “, or for those who need something more than the typical traditional browser.
But his ambitions were going very well, as we could see with the new software. Vivaldi is the result of about a year and a half of development, in which the team has given the goal of creating something more functional than the same Opera. The same von Tetzchner admits that some features have been included on purpose by the most famous web browser, but introduces an interface designed for the experienced user.
” There’s plenty of choice of browsers for a mass that does not take much, ” said the creator of Vivaldi. ” We’re aiming for the type of user who spends a lot of time online, holding open a lot of pages and like to work efficiently with different content. ” The team does not yet have the firepower to develop an engine from scratch: after considering the implementation of WebKit and the Mozilla engine, the choice fell on Chromium.
Vivaldi still lacks some important features: it lacks the bookmark’s bar, which is only partially replaced by ” speed-dial “, as is still missing support for extensions. This is only a matter of time: do not forget that Vivaldi is still at an early embryonic version and of course a lot of room for improvement. At the moment, the development team is consisting of 25 employees, with von Tetzchner which is the only funding the relevant companies.
