AMD updates its Radeon Pro Duo card using two GPUs from the Polaris family, with a significant increase in the amount of video memory available now.
AMD has announced a new video card from the Radeon Pro family, designed to be used in graphics workstations by joining a video card that uses the same commercial name but which is based on different types of GPUs.
The new AMD Radeon Pro Duo card is equipped with two Polaris 10 GPUs, each with 16 Gbytes of GDDR5 memory type video memory with 256bit wide bus for each GPU. The previous version of the Radeon Pro Duo card, announced in April 2016, features two GPUs from the Fiji family, each with 4 Gbytes of HBM (High-Bandwidth Memory) memory.
The reference target is similar to that of the previous generation model: that of the so-called content creators, engaged both in video production and in building virtual reality solutions.
The new Radeon Pro Duo card differs considerably from the first version of the card, benefiting from all the innovations implemented by AMD within the Polaris architecture, starting from a total power consumption.
AMD declares for this product a 250 Watt TDP, against the 350 Watts of the Fiji family’s GPU-based Radeon Pro Duo solution. Considering the different GPUs in the game, the theoretical maximum computing power offered by the two tabs changes: the new model boasts a peak data of 11.45 TFlops, below the 16.38 TFlops of the Fiji family’s two GPU card.
Another significant difference is the type of memory used for the two cards: from the proposed HBM modules with GPU Fiji, we move to the more traditional GDDR5 memory of the card with Polaris GPU. Big differences are those related to the amount of memory matched to each GPU, ranging from 4 to 16 Gbytes in the new arriving: this element is particularly interesting considering the reference target of this product, which is that of graphic workstations and professional applications.
The new card also differs for display connections, which are now DisplayPort 1.4 and HDMI 2.0b against the DP 1.2 and HDMI 1.4b connections on the Radeon Pro Duo. This allows the newcomer to handle 8K display connections, using a two-wire configuration.
