The update Android 4.4 KitKat for Nexus 7 (2012 and 2013, only wifi version) and Nexus 10 are officially available since this morning. Some users have already taken steps to upgrade their devices and were able to point out. What are the new features and the differences are not minor, with the version of KitKat for Nexus 5.
As reported by many this update introduces what may be the first real fragmentation in the panorama of Nexus devices.
Nothing, therefore, Google Experience Launcher for Nexus, except the Nexus 5. This means that the launcher has remained the same stock also on Jelly Bean without greater integration with Google Now offered by GEL and without the setback on the widget manager. The most important aesthetic differences are then noted in the navbar and the status bar that are not transparent, but black, evidently the transparency is an exclusive feature of the Nexus 5.
In short, Google’s choices may seem strange, but it was decided to fragment the Nexus range which, until now was the only one to offer uniformity and hotfixes.
Already, hotfixes, this is another area where Google has definitely made another big misstep. First of all, the decision not to upgrade, because of the 18 months of support now expired, the Galaxy Nexus though still many users possess, and secondly the decision to make available from the update to KitKat only several days after the launch of the Nexus 5, all the while the owners of the Nexus 4 and the Nexus 7 (with mobile networks) are still waiting.
Google’s policy in this case is definitely questionable and, from our point of view, wrong. The Nexus range could be enriched by a great terminal as the Nexus 5 and at the same time strengthen the excellent foundations laid towards users with legacy devices … but it seems to have been made to the contrary.
