Apple celebrates 20 years of iMac, here are all the models
On 6 May 1998, Steve Jobs announced to the whole world the first iMac, the device of the rebirth of the Cupertino company.
May 6th was a particularly important day for Apple, as it marked the twentieth anniversary of the announcement of the first iMac by the unforgettable Steve Jobs. May 6, 1998 is a date to remember not so much for the product itself, but because it marked a radical change of approach by the company, which led to a series of successes in the information technology until it became the company from the value highest in absolute stock.
The same Tim Cook celebrated the date with a short post on Twitter with these paorle: ” 20 years ago, Steve introduced the iMac to the world. He projected Apple into a new course and changed the way people considered forever. the computers “. Twenty years ago, Jobs announced him with the words ” This is iMac “, just eight months after his return to Apple after being removed twelve years earlier. The event was organized at the Flint Center, the same that had given birth to the first Macintosh in 1984.
iMac was welcomed by the public with thunderous applauses, above all because on the aesthetic level, the computer appeared as something completely new: at that time, the PCs were angular, neutral colors, and not too ” beautiful “. iMac, on the other hand, presented itself as an all-in-one system consisting of only the monitor, with curved sides, transparent plastic, and with some inserts in blue contrasting with the white of the rest of the device. Later, the other colors also arrived.
The technical specifications of the first iMac were as follows :
- CPU : PowerPC G3 @ 233 MHz
- Display : 15″ by 1024×768 pixels
- Connectivity : 2 x USB, Ethernet and integrated modem
- Memory : 32 MB of RAM (expandable up to 128 MB), 4 GB HDD
- Optical drive : 24x CD-ROM
- Extra : stereo speakers with SRS, USB keyboard and mouse
- OS : Mac OS 8.1.
” This stuff is transparent, you can see what’s inside and it’s beautiful, ” commented Steve Jobs on the Flint Center stage. ” We have two stereo speakers in front, the infrared here, the CD-ROM drive in the middle, and we have the dual stereo headphone jacks. We have the coolest mouse on the planet here. All connectors are stuck in this beautiful door here, like the Ethernet port, the USB stuff. We have a great handle behind it, and the back of this stuff is much nicer than the other guys, anyway “(referring to the competition products).”
Apple’s goal with iMac was to connect users to the Internet, and the same prefix ” i ” had the task of remembering the Great Network. The i did not mean only the Internet, but also individual, inform and inspire. iMac was one of the emblems of Apple’s new strategy, with Steve Jobs who, on his return, tried to simplify the company line-up with four main products, two notebooks and two desktops, both in two variants for consumers and professionals, respectively.
The iMac eliminated the floppy disk and legacy ports, and was one of the first products with fanless designs or with FireWire ports. More importantly, he managed to get Apple’s budgets back to positive after a period of four consecutive years in red.
After two decades, the iMac is still here, and has undergone several revolutions: the first in 2002, when the thin flat screen arrived on a hemisphere base that contained electronics. In 2004, the display module also contained the computer, while in 2007 the plastic chassis was replaced for a more elegant aluminum variant.
