BenQ GV1 Portable Projector: Netflix and mobile games up to 100”

Small and portable, the BenQ GV1 projector is a candidate for mobile entertainment, thanks to its built-in battery and powerful sound. Easy to use via USB-C / DisplayPort can receive video streams even in wireless mode via Wi-Fi.

When you go on vacation, camping or simply when you are with friends for a party. Sometimes you would like to be able to bring your TV with you, to continue to follow your favorite TV series, to enjoy a movie, to play games or to watch YouTube videos with friends.

A portable projector can be the solution, and the small BenQ GV1 is a candidate for this type of use. I must say that I have tried some other portable projector model in this type of situation, but BenQ GV1 seems to have more weapons than the competition from the first moment.

Let’s start with the form factor. Compared to the classic projectors, it has a vertical parallelepiped shape (dimensions 6.1 x 3.1 x 3.1 inches), with a reduced footprint, which easily finds space on desks and tables and is very stable.

It is a good thing to have integrated a system of inclination of the optics up to 15°, to raise the image with respect to the level in which the projector is positioned, with automatic keystone function, which restores the rectangular shape to the image (with respect to the trapezoidal shape that assumes a projection not perfectly perpendicular to the wall).

The small projector offers a 200 ANSI Lumen LED DLP projection system, capable of reproducing an image up to 100 inches. It uses a DLP 3430 projection system, and Osram Q9 LED light source, with an estimated duration of 30,000 hours.

The strength of BenQ GV1 is its simplicity. It has an integrated battery that allows about 3 hours of projection, offers Dual band Wi-Fi connectivity and USB-C connector with Display Port support, which can also be used with the classic HDMI via adapter.

The USB port can also be used to supply power to the connected device, but only when the projector is connected to the power supply to the mains. Taking advantage of an existing Wi-Fi network or creating the Hot Spot directly with the projector, you can then view contents in wireless mode from a PC, Android smartphone and Apple iOS terminals without having to install additional apps.

The projector uses an Android operating system and through the USB-C port, it can also be used as a media player that can play movies, videos and music directly from a USB flash drive. Moreover, thanks to the presence on board of Aptoide, it is possible to install applications, such as YouTube or Netflix, to watch videos without going through the phone.

BenQ GV1 integrates a 5W speaker, to reproduce the sounds of video streams. The sound power is very good and allows the use of the system without having to worry about carrying additional boxes. Indeed, GV1 can be used in Bluetooth mode and turn itself into a wireless speaker, when you want to listen to music without video streams. The sound has a good spatiality and fills the room well, but it is also good for outdoor use.

All these features make the use of BenQ GV1 really easy, not only for entertainment, but also in the professional environment, for on-the-go presentations, without the usual problems that often arise: compatibility, cables, adapters.

Speaking of cables, the package includes a USB-C / USB-C cable and a transformer for charging, as well as a practical package in soft, perforated fabric for transport. About transportation, the projector weighs 3.24 pounds.

Defects? Like all products, it is not perfect, but it makes up for its defects. The interface via remote control is not always intuitive and is not very comfortable, the first thing I did was look for an app, but it is not there.

Also because if I had to use the projector, it would probably be the first thing I would forget at home. There is also to say that the remote control is small and thin and can be carried with the projector and the USB-C cable inside the soft case. Inside it, it is impossible to find a place for the adapter, and the device cannot be powered by USB-C. The latter is perhaps the biggest flaw: the network adapter with non-standard connector is a bit anachronistic.

In battery mode, the projector lowers the maximum brightness and does not allow the choice of the image profile. When connected to the mains it provides the cinema profile, the sports profile, vivid image and presentation. In entry, the projector supports resolutions up to Full HD and projects with native resolution of 854×480 pixels.

The price of $439 makes it definitely interesting as an investment in the professional environment for those who are often off site to make presentations, the simplicity and multiplicity of ways of interaction are really a strength. In the consumer sphere, it can represent a fairly high entry barrier and will certainly limit the user base, even though those who will probably buy it will not regret spending.
