Google today launched Chrome 42 for Windows, Mac and Linux with new tools for developers, security updates and the ability to receive push notifications even if you close the site of interest.
Chrome is much more than a browser. We could define a platform with which access to a number of accessory functionalities typical of operating systems. Through the software can run applications, add extensions to enhance the experience of the web and, with the latest version 42 made public yesterday, was added native support for push notification. Let’s see what it is.
Chrome 42 offers two new APIs, API and Push Notifications API, which together enable sites to send notifications to their users even when that specific web page is closed. As already announced Google, the feature will not be invasive, your browser will ask permission for receipt of notifications from each site. In addition, the company requires that in any notification, there is a link to the site settings with which quickly disable the feature.
Google continues to progressively remove support for plug-ins that make use of the Netscape Plugin Application Programming Interface (NPAPI). Chrome 40 of these plug-ins were blocked by default, even if they could be viewed with a special option, while the most-recent version support is completely disabled. Google has also started not to publish more on Chrome Web Store extensions that require the same plug-in for their operation.
The most experienced users can still turn on, but it is a permit that Google will give up to September 2015, the date on which all developers will have to comply with the new standards. In a few months, Google will remove all the alternatives, permanently removing support for NPAPI on Chrome. Starting in September, all the extensions and the sites that make use of NPAPI will not be uploaded to the Google browser.
The new build 42 also integrates some optimizations in terms of performance: ” The team WebRTC, along with many other groups developing Chrome gave priority to improvements in terms of performance for this release, ” it said in the release notes. The GPU acceleration should be more efficient on Windows, any differences could be mainly related to the hardware that you use does.
Full-bodied, as usual, also the corrections on the security front, a topic that can be deepened on this page, on the official blog of Chrome. The latest version of the browser can be downloaded at this address, as if already using an older version of the update should be done automatically.
