Chrome 79, the warnings about stolen passwords and the freezing tab arrive: All the news
The Google browser has been updated on both desktop and mobile (iOS and Android). On the page, you will find the main news regarding the PC version.
Google has just released Chrome V.79, and in the new version, we have some very interesting features that mainly improve security and performance. Among the novelties, we have for example: a new warning that informs the user if one of the passwords used in the various services was stolen in one of the known breaches that occurred in the past, and there are also additional protections for phishing and the new ” tab freezing ” feature “.
Monitoring of passwords stolen and made available in public has been carried out by various online services, such as HaveIBeenPwned.com, which allows you to enter your credentials and check if they are present in a single large database that contains all the stolen credentials in the course of time. The whole operation is now carried out in real-time by Chrome, each time a password is entered on a site in the browser.
Google will keep a list of known phishing sites or sites that attempt to collect users’ passwords on their own, and this feature will be active by default on all installations: Chrome will notify you when you visit a site known for phishing and will try to predict if a site not on the list is trying to fraudulently collect information. It alerts will be released not only for the Google password but also for all passwords saved on Chrome.
Google has also introduced new features to improve Chrome’s performance, but in this case, it is a feature to be activated optionally. The freezing tab, which we talked about above, is an ” experiment ” at the moment.
It can be activated on chrome://flags/#proactive-tab-freeze and allows you to delete from the memory all the tabs that have been active for five minutes or more, thus freeing up the resources occupied for other activities of the browser or the system in general. The feature is optional today, but could be activated by default with future releases.
Chrome has also improved the way multiple profiles are presented and has begun to counteract what it calls ” mixed content “, that is, elements that are uploaded via HTTP within HTTPS pages. If a video is uploaded through the unsafe protocol, then Chrome will block the execution of the element and the reproduction.
