Dell XPS 13 (2018): Even smaller, and more powerful
The new Dell XPS 13 intends to continue the family tradition, with an InfinityEdge display (even 4K and touch) and a new revised dissipation system. The power also increases thanks to the use of eighth-generation Intel processors.
Dell announced the new Dell XPS 13, the ultra-portable with reduced frames that is characterized by the combination of small size and high performance in productivity. The new ultrabook of the American multinational plans to break some records, placing itself on the market as one of the smallest, lightest and most performing solutions for the 13.3-inch segment. Among the new features a latest generation InfinityEdge 4K display and a new thermal insulation system called GORE.
Decreases in size compared to the predecessor, with a design that remains rather similar compared to the canons of the family: the thickness is reduced from 9-15 to 7.8-11.6 mm; while the width decreases from 304 to 302 mm.
Substantially unchanged the weight, about 1.2 kilograms and a little more for the version with touch display. Dell XPS 13 is the variant of the family with a 13.3-inch display, here in both Full HD (an IPS, also touch, with 72% color gamut sRGB, 400 nits of luminance) and in the 4K touch version with 100% of color gamut sRGB.
Under the slim body, we find two eighth-generation Intel processors, both quad-core: i5-7250U and i7-8550U, supported by 4, 8 or 16 GB of RAM and the integrated Intel Graphics 620 GPU capable of managing – of course – the 4K resolution. Several storage options: on SATA standard, we only find the 128 GB cut, while on the most performing PCIe platform the available cuts are from 256, 512 and 1 TB. In the handset, we find two stereo speakers, an HD webcam with four microphones compatible with Windows Hello and with Cortana even at long distances.
For authentication, there is also a fingerprint scanner, located on the power button, while physical connectivity is guaranteed by different ports: two Thunderbolt 3 with PowerShare and DisplayPort, a USB Type C, also with PowerShare and DisplayPort, an SD card reader, and a headphone jack.
The handset is compatible with a Wi-Fi Killer 802.11ac 2×2 network adapter and with Bluetooth 4.1 and Miracast standards, while the keyboard has backlight and short-stroke keys (1.3mm). GORE, finally, will offer Dell said levels of thermal conductivity lower than air within a small volume.
The integrated battery is 52WHr, usually integrated and not removable by users without voiding the warranty, and should guarantee an autonomy of almost 20 hours with normal use of the device. As usual, materials are rather sought after: the body is made of aluminum with the supporting part of the palm of the hand in composite material (carbon fiber), while the rose gold version is in aluminum and fiberglass.
