DxO announces the DxO ONE for Android, an external camera with USB Type-C connector
DxO has announced that its DxO ONE, an external camera to be combined with a smartphone, will soon be compatible with devices equipped with Android operating system. In fact, a model with a USB Type-C connector is coming soon.
DxO, the company known for its camera ratings and reference point by many in the world of photography on smartphones, announced the DxO ONE camera for Android. It is an accessory to be connected via USB Type-C port to improve – in theory – the photographic capacities of the devices.
The DxO ONE for Android follows the iOS model, now in its second version. This is an external device that remains connected to the smartphone via USB Type-C connector; inside there is a 1 inch BSI sensor with a resolution of 20.2 megapixels and lenses with an aperture of f/1.8.
The camera supports RAW saving; it is not clear if you can use normal camera applications and the Camera2 API, or if you need to use a camera application developed by DxO and compatible only with the DxO ONE. This second hypothesis is more probable, given the use of the Type-C connection.
An accessory of this kind could be interesting in three cases: if the camera of the device to which it is connected was of low quality, if the accessory itself was able to take excellent photographs, or if it offered good performances at an affordable price.
The price of the iPhone version is currently $469, which would automatically exclude the last case if it were also reported to the version for Android; in the first case, given the price, one wonders how much it would be worth buying such a device instead of a new high-end smartphone, with all the positive ” side effects ” of the case. The last case, the second, does not seem to be that of the iPhone version and there is currently no reason to believe that the DxO ONE for Android could lead to different results.
DxO will be proposed in the coming weeks through an early access program open to all. The company has not communicated details about the actual launch window and the price of the device.
