Finally the cheap NVMe SSD arrive: WD announces the new Blue SN500
With three times the performance of SATA 3 SSD, the new WD Blue SN500 NVMe aims to lower the prices of technology in the consumer environment: they are available in denominations of 250 and 500 GB.
Western Digital has formalized the new WD Blue SN500 NVMe with the aim of bringing the technology to enthusiast PCs at the lowest cost. With a list price of $54.99 for the 250 GB model, and $77.99 for the 500 GB model, the new units deliver a read speed of 1700 MB/s and 1450 MB/s for writing ( tests performed on the 500 GB model). The release date has not yet been announced.
On the official website, you can find different information on the new models, while at this address you can register to receive a notification when making your debut (in the USA). Both models will be offered within the traditional M.2 2280 PCIe Gen3 x2 form factor, with chipsets arranged along one side. They are designed for compatible notebooks, especially those with an ultra-slim profile, but also for larger systems and for canonical desktops.
The performances are very high, even if not first in the class: the 250 GB variant can display a value of 1700 MB / s in sequential reading and 1300 MB/s in sequential writing, while the random reading we have 210000 IOPS and in random writing 170000, while on the reliability front, the warranty is 5 years, and the manufacturer declares up to 150 TB written and a duration in time of about 1.75 million hours.
The 500 GB model will be slightly more performing: the sequential reading remains at 1700 MB/s, while the sequential writing increases up to 1450 MB/s. As for the random reading, we have 275000 IOPS, for random writing 300,000 IOPS, and in terms of reliability the manufacturer declares 300 TB written and a time in operation of 1.75 million hours. All with consumption that is around, as usual for SSDs, in around 2.7W.
The new SSD are designed to meet the modern needs of the evolved user, as WD Eyal Bek stated: ” With the contents that are going from 4K to 8K is the perfect time to go from SATA to NVMe for a whole series of users such as video and photo editors, content creators, enthusiast PCs and for those who make massive data usage. The WD Blue SN500 NVMe SSD will allow users to achieve great performance on notebooks and PC, combining them with a slim form factor and resistant “.
