Firefox, the integrated VPN arrives: This is how it works and how to try it (in the USA)
Mozilla has announced the new native VPN on Firefox. It currently only works in the US and is in beta. In the future, however, it could be paid for by all.
Mozilla is increasingly turning to those who want maximum privacy during their web sessions: first with a new version of Firefox released last week which blocks third-party trackers by default, and now with a new project. Firefox Private Network offers ” secure and encrypted access to the web “, and is nothing more than a native VPN on Firefox.
Firefox Private Network is a VPN that works inside the browser, so it manages only and exclusively the traffic that passes through it. Everything that happens outside, for example: on dedicated clients, games or applications connected to the internet, does not pass through the VPN and is not masked unless an app dedicated to the purpose is used.
The use of ” FPN ” is recommended by Mozilla in different circumstances, such as when using a public Wi-Fi network, or if you want maximum protection from advertising trackers.
The new Firefox VPN is currently in beta testing only users who live in the United States can try it. It can be activated using the desktop version of Firefox (obviously also working on a laptop) and you must log in with the Firefox account. To activate it, install the extension at this address and then interact with the dedicated icon on the toolbar activating the feature.
Those who have already had occasion to try the Firefox Private Network speak of a slight degradation in download speed (a fairly common feature with VPNs), the performance in simple web browsing is not compromised. Currently, it is not possible to set your position to countries other than the one in which you are at the time of navigation, so for this type of use you must go elsewhere.
It should be emphasized that Firefox Private Network will not be free forever. At the time of writing, American users can use it during testing. It is free but only ” for a limited time ” based on what was announced by Mozilla. The VPN on Firefox is not an absolute surprise at Mozilla, since in recent times, the company has shown interest in technology on several occasions.
In June, specifically, the CEO of Mozilla stated that he would start offering premium features for a fee on Firefox, and that a VPN service was present among the viable options. Firefox Private Network is specifically the first project of the reborn Test Pilot program: first, it served to offer users experimental features, while now it will be completely turned to new upcoming services that have the sole purpose of improving user privacy, and a VPN it is certainly a necessary step towards this direction.
