Fujifilm GFX 100: The 100 MPixel medium format
Fujifilm GFX 100 is the long-awaited medium camera with over 100 MPixel resolution. The Japanese manufacturer has put all his experience into creating this new model that aims directly at professionals.
The new Fujifilm GFX 100 was finally unveiled in the world. As it can be guessed from the name, we are talking about the new mirrorless camera with medium sensor format with 100 MPixel resolution (102 MPixel to be precise) ) able to capture the smallest detail.
Fujifilm GFX 100: here’s the new sensor
Thanks to the 55 mm diagonal of the medium format sensor (1.5 times larger than a full-frame) it was possible to integrate a large number of pixels inside it. Fujifilm GFX 100 uses a backlit sensor so that it can receive lighter while reducing noise.
The new sensor also supports the PDAF (3.76 million pixels that are distributed over the entire surface to cover 100% of the area) guaranteeing a focus twice as fast as the previous solutions of the Japanese manufacturer. But not only that, the focus also supports Tracking AF and a continuous AF that should be more accurate. Face Detection and Eye Detection are not lacking as per market trends.
The 102 MPixel resolution sensor is aided in image processing by the new X-Processor 4 processor which allows you to get high-impact photographs right from the moment of shooting. Do not miss the support for the 16-bit RAW mode or the 16-bit TIFF conversion but also the ” smooth skin effect ” feature directly on-camera avoiding this step in post-production.
The ISO sensitivity varies from a minimum of 50 up to 102,400 (passing through 25,600 and 51,200) while for movies it stops at 25,600.
Stabilization in the camera body helps
As already rumored in the past, the new camera has within it the image stabilization (IBIS) on five axes and that can correct up to 5.5 stops with GF63mm F2.8 R WR lens. Working on five axes, the integrated system in the Fujifilm GFX 100 allows for correcting pitch, yaw and horizontal, vertical and rotation movements.
Inside we find then four springs that support the shutter unit and allow to compensate for the vibrations produced by the shutter. This allows you to capture images even ” freehand ” and not necessarily with the tripod and avoiding the micro blur.
Not only photographs but also videos
Although designed as a camera, this new Fujifilm GFX 100 does not disdain the video part, indeed. It is the first medium-format camera capable of recording videos at 4K30p (10 bits 4:2:2 externally and 4:2:0 internally).
Do not miss the support for the film standard 17: 9 which allows the camera to use a sensor area of 43.8 x 23.19 mm with a diagonal of 49.56 mm.
The video oversampling instead is done with a resolution of 50.5 MPixel with H.265 / HEVC codec but also ” F-Log ” and ” Hybrid Log Gamma (HLG) ” allowing the recording of movies with HDR. Fujifilm, remains in love with the world of film and even in the GFX 100, we find the ” ETERNA ” cinema film simulation mode allowing even more creative results.
Magnesium alloy and body designed to last
Fujifilm GFX 100 is obviously a camera designed to be durable and that involved a study of ergonomics and materials to make it usable too. The body is made of magnesium alloy (light and resistant) while we find a large vertical handle to hold it firmly in hand.
Obviously, we could not miss a machine body able to withstand weather and dust so that it can also be used outdoors (and not just in the studio). To reduce the possible problems caused by external factors, the electronic and optical part is isolated from the main body.
The dimensions are equal to 156.2 x 163.6x 102.9 mm while the weight touches 1.4 kg, including the two batteries, a memory card and the electronic viewfinder (EVF). The two batteries guarantee up to 800 shots even using the rear display and can be recharged (or powered) via USB Type-C. The connectivity provides Wi-Fi 802.11 ac 5 GHz able to send photographs quickly to a PC.
In the upper area, there is a 1.8″ diagonal LCD display while in the rear, there is a 3.2″ display (3.26 MPixel) that can be rotated in three directions. Finally, always in the rear area (lower) there is an additional 2.05″ display.
Fujifilm GFX 100 then has a few buttons and dials so that it is as immediate as possible to use, leaving room for the photographer’s creativity. EVF, designed for the 102 MPixel sensor and removable, protrudes from the upper area and has a resolution of 5.76 MPixel offering 100% coverage (to improve ergonomics it is also tiltable with different adjustments).
