Signed a partnership between Google and Novartis that will result in the marketing of contact lenses that can continuously measure the level of glucose in the blood, with much greater ambitions regarding the additional capabilities that complement it.
The Google contact lenses are a partner that will transform them from project to reality. It is Novartis, the Swiss pharmaceutical industry giant that use licensed technology patented by Mountain View to create this particular type of contact lens that our editorial staff already spoke earlier in the year.
The methodologies for the control are uncomfortable and painful; to remedy these problems Google has built a prototype of the contact lens capable of measuring the level of glucose through the tears of the eyeball. Thanks to a tiny sensor chip and a wi-fi, the lens is able to perform a measurement on the second and possibly to send a signal to a smartphone or other devices, or through the integration of a tiny LED, so keep monitored the situation and warn in case it is necessary to integrate the sugar level as soon as possible.
The lenses come out of Google Labs X; it is a smart device capable of continuously analyze the tear fluid of the eye and measure in real time, on the smartphone, the level of glucose in the blood: especially useful for diabetic patients, in this way will prevent the uncomfortable home system currently used to monitor such value that it plans to sting.
The Swiss company seems not to want to restrict only to this one function: according to what the source says, the idea is to also treat presbyopia, considering the possibility of implanting the lens directly into the eyes of users: although it is a significant step forward, it is still a technology born recently, and it will take time before it is authorized by national health authorities.
