Jared Cohen, director of Google Ideas, aims to fight ISIS, stepping up efforts on open web weakening and, thus, the echo media made possible by the use of social networks and online media.
Jared Cohen, director of Google Ideas, has made clear his view of ISIS fighting the terms of a recent interview with the Royal Institute of International Affairs, as reported today by The Guardian. To stop ISIS, says Cohen, is necessary to step up the fight in the open web, or that portion of the network, as opposed to the dark web, through which the terrorist organization can produce a great media echo, using, among another, the social networks.
Cohen is rather skeptical about the possibility of preventing terrorists from using tools like Tor and access the Web Dark; more chances of success you would be fighting the terrorists in open web, part of the network that can be indexed by search engines.
Choen says on the point : The new element is that they are operating without being rejected by the Internet which we all benefit. So the key to success is to contain the ISIS Web dark.
The approach suggested by Google to combat ISIS goes to the weakening of the web conveyed in open propaganda, taking advantage of not only social media, but also the online news sources, the ability to quickly share video network, create hashtags and bots to give further echo their messages.
The number one of Google Ideas does not fail to highlight some negative effects of the free access to social networks like Facebook and Twitter by members of terrorist organizations. To perceive the public image of the organization is magnified a propaganda technique made possible by the modern communication channels:
The ISIS has managed to create an exaggerated perception of their online dimension, creating many more accounts than have its members and giving life thereby to the narrative of the group that is winning. But while the digital front is more complex, it could be that the ground on which we get the greatest victories in the short term, so we should not overlook.
The tools of the struggle on the digital front are substantiated, according to choen, in penalties for those who openly promotes the cause of ISIS using online media, from the prompt closing of the company accounts, thus breaking the expansion of the network of contacts and nipping in the bud the work of proselytism.
Jared choen, ISIS should be considered the work of propaganda uses quite basic techniques, such as spam, at the same time, lower the guard a not particularly expert in technology, as to spread the net and carry on, especially on the side of the open web. It could be very risky.
