A young Scottish programmer has found a way to compile C++ code in JavaScript at runtime and to manage native Windows 95 to the browser.
The 19 year old programmer Andrew Faulds is able to run Windows 95 in one of the tabbed browser natively without having to make time-consuming installations or configurations. Basically, he has ported the famous emulator Dosbox in JavaScript, obviously not providing the source code, still secret, Windows 95.
The Dosbox porting was done through emscripten, an emulator that compiles code C++ in JavaScript at runtime.
Since it is not a direct emulation of Windows 95, the system goes to well experience a sudden crash of apps such as games or Internet Explorer and is slower than the normal version of Windows 95 on Dosbox. But precisely it allows you to relive the unforgettable experience of the famous operating system within the web browser, without the need to install plugins or other applications.
The version of Windows 95 that the Scottish program runs on the browser is Windows 95 OSR2 with Internet Explorer 3.0. Find all the details on its official website, along with instructions on how to launch the old OS.
