Huawei HongMeng OS on a smartphone by the end of the year
Huawei’s proprietary operating system could be announced in the coming days and make its appearance on the market later this year: but on a smartphone or on a smart TV?
Although in recent weeks, Huawei has wanted to point out that HongMeng OS – the proprietary operating system that the Chinese giant has been developing behind the scenes for a long time – is not meant to be used on smartphones, an indiscretion comes from the Chinese site Global Times on which states that a phone equipped with HongMeng could be placed on the market by the end of the year.
According to the Chinese website, the smartphone in question could be a mid-range device, priced at around 2,000 Yuan. The goal would be to attract developers and users to the new ecosystem, which is likely to compete with Android. Huawei does not aim to sell large volumes of this smartphone, but to bring in the hands of the HongMeg OS public at a fairly affordable price.
Huawei’s developer conference is scheduled for August 9 in Dongguan, an event that could be exploited by the Chinese giant to announce the new operating system. But the rumors that are circulating these days go further and – this time from Korea – they talk about a Honor brand smart TV, also equipped with HongMeng OS.
During the recent conference call on the sidelines of the presentation of financial results, Huawei’s president Lian Hua said that Android is the operating system of choice for the company’s devices, but that HongMeng is part of a long-term strategy.
For now, the information circulating on Huawei’s proprietary operating system is still quite nebulous, and it is not clear whether HongMeng will become a fundamental element for all Huawei devices.
Certainly, given the recent events following the restraining order issued by US President Donald Trump, the Chinese company is working to have alternative roads available for any hardware or software element that today depends on US realities.
