Insta360 ONE R: the first with the Leica partnership
Insta360 ONE R is the new solution presented at CES 2020 by Insta360: it is a modular action cam that can boast the collaboration with Leica for one of the mods and the ability to adapt to the user needs.
Insta360 ONE R is the latest version of the manufacturer, presented during CES 2020, which joins the previous Insta360 GO, Insta360 EVO and Insta360 Titan. This is the first solution that comes after the partnership with Leica, which should guarantee better image quality and more.
The basic concept remains similar to the other models presented in the past: solutions that allow it to be used on various occasions, light, practical and that exploit Artificial Intelligence to simplify editing operations (even at 360 °).
Insta360 ONE R: Modular and adaptable
What changes compared to the past is the concept of modularity around which the new Insta360 ONE R rotates. It is possible to capture 360° videos but also 4K with a wide-angle lens while the version with 1″ sensor is capable of reaching a maximum resolution of 5.3K.
The manufacturer ” leverages ” on a basic concept: in the center remains the main unit with a sensor, basic optics, and hardware for managing the acquired content. A series of accessories can then be added. To adapt to every need.
With the Mod 360, it is possible to use two Insta360 ONE R to shoot 360° (one rotated forward and one backward) supporting the acquisition with a maximum resolution of 5.7K. A preview of the shot can be viewed on the integrated screen, and technologies such as Color Plus, HDR, and Night Shot are also supported to allow you to have quality images. The aperture is f/2.8.
As for the 4K Wide-Angle Mod, there is the possibility of recording with a resolution of up to 4K at 60 fps with support for image stabilization and also for slow-mo. Because of the design choices, you can place the touch screen in the front or rear simply (this allows you to control the shooting in real-time). In this case, the aperture is f/2.0.
Then there is the Wide-Angle Mod with 1″ sensor, which was developed together with Leica. All of this obviously in favor of the overall image quality (according to the manufacturer, never seen on an action camera). With the larger sensor, it is you can capture videos up to 5.3K and 19 MPixel photos even when the lighting is poor. The aperture is f/3.2.
Stabilization and choice of the best shots via the algorithm
For the stabilization of the images shot with Insta360 ONE R is there is an algorithm called FlowState that works with both standard and 360° shooting. Integrated inside, there is a 6-axis gyroscope.
Being an action cam, waterproofness is expected from the Insta360 ONE R. And the design provides for IPX8 certification equal to 5 meters of depth (without accessories) while it can be up to 60 meters with the Dive Case which can be purchased separately. There also voice controls to manage some features without having to touch any command but only dictating what needs to be done.
As for the 360° shooting, also, in this case, Artificial Intelligence comes to the user’s rescue. It is possible to automatically select the best shots and recommend them to users. Obviously, this is extra help, but the user will have full freedom of action.
Again with Artificial Intelligence, it is possible to lock the focus on a subject that will always remain at the center of the shot, even if the view is partially obstructed by another object/subject. This mode can be activated in post-production or the Deep Track can be performed in real-time both via touchscreen and with voice commands.
With the dual-action cam mode, you can also take advantage of the cancellation of the selfie-stick or other supports to make the shooting look similar to that of a drone.
Insta360 ONE R has two integrated microphones while, thanks to the software, it is possible to automatically reduce the effect of the wind. For those who want it is still possible to insert a microphone with external 3.5 mm jack thanks to the connection to the Type-C port (with adapter).
The software then provides different modes such as the Hyperlapse TimeShift, which is available in a more practical way than before. At the same time, it is possible to identify similar frames to achieve stop-motion (almost) automatically. There is also Starlapse for shooting the night sky while the Bullet Time effect is now updated with a new algorithm.
FlashCut allows you to automatically extract content based on a common theme (without having to cover all the footage). For example, food, travel or pets. All with support for both standard and 360° movies.
To extend the autonomy, there is both a standard base with an integrated battery and an even larger base with greater autonomy. For those with a supported drone, it is then possible to buy a support that allows you to hook the Insta360 for 360° shooting in aerial mode.
