Intel XMM 8160: the 5G modem for mobile devices
Intel XMM 8160 is the new 5G modem (but which also supports other connectivity) that was presented in these hours by the manufacturer of Santa Clara. Here is the first official information on this model.
Intel XMM 8160 is the new modem presented by the Santa Clara company that will allow mobile devices to communicate with the new 5G standard. As we have already written on several occasions, 5G connectivity will begin its journey to become a ubiquitous standard from next year, even if 4G and 3G are not ” retired ” immediately.
The new Intel XMM 8160 has been expressly designed for devices such as smartphones, PCs and gateways. According to initial specifications, this new 5G modem will support maximum speeds up to 6 Gbps making it much faster than previous connection modes. The actual launch timing on the market is given for the second half of 2019 while the devices will arrive in 2020.
But the Intel XMM 8160 will not only support the standard 5G New Radio (NR), standalone (SA) and non-standalone (NSA) with mmWave and NG 5G sub 6 GHz frequencies (including FDD and TDD bands from 600 MHz to 6 GHz). It will then be backwards compatible with 4G, 3G and 2G allowing it to have ample support for peripherals and infrastructures currently on the market. Multi-standard multimode support is also planned at the same time.
One of the peculiarities of this model is that of being able to manage all these standards in a single chip, thus benefiting the manufacturers of devices that can produce compact and energy-efficient products.
Dr Cormac Conroy (VP and GM of the Intel Communication and Devices Group) said, ” the new XMM 8160 5G modem from Intel offers the ideal solution to support large volumes to be scalable across multiple device categories in conjunction with the spread of 5G. We are seeing a great demand for the advanced features of the XMM 8160, so that we made a strategic decision and start the modem launch half a year earlier to provide a leading 5G solution. “
