KDE Slimbook II is now available: Here is UltraPortable of the KDE project
KDE is one of the first desktop environments created for Linux, and the project has signed an agreement with the Spanish Slimbook because this produces a special laptop: that’s how KDE Slimbook II is born.
The KDE project announced the launch of the second generation of laptop designed to be compatible with KDE neon, the distribution born from the project. Called KDE Slimbook II, it is a Slimbook Katana II with KDE neon preinstalled and whose compatibility is certified.
Slimbook is a Spanish company and offers the possibility to install different operating systems on its laptops; from the collaboration with the KDE project was born the KDE Slimbook, a 13.3-inch laptop with a full-HD resolution.
Inside the aluminum body are placed Intel processors of the i5 or i7 family (i5-7200 at 2.5 GHz or i7-7500 at 2.7 GHz), DDR4 RAM in the cuts of 4, 8 and 16 GB, SSD M.2 from 120, 250, 500 GB or 1 TB with an additional 2.5-inch slot, three USB ports (including a USB 2.0, a USB 3.1 and a USB 3.1 Type-C), an HDMI port, WiFi ( choice of Intel modules with IEEE 802.11no IEEE 802.11ac support), Bluetooth 4.0, SD card reader and 45 Wh battery (6,100 mAh). The keyboard is backlit.
The laptop has dimensions of 32.5 x 22 cm, with the thickness going from 0.6 cm at the thinnest point to 1.6 cm at the thickest point. The weight is equal to 1.3 kg.
The company claims that the handset is able to guarantee ” between 5 and 8 hours of real use ” in terms of autonomy: a discrete result, but still not at par with respect to some systems of better-known brands. If you think the use of the Linux kernel, which often lacks optimization on this front compared to Windows and macOS, we can speak of a good result.
Although it is possible to purchase the Katana II with KDE neon installed, the purchase of the KDE Slimbook II guarantees that some of the proceeds go to finance the KDE project. The base price of the KDE Slimbook II is € 699 for the i5 core version and € 799 for the Core i7 version.
