Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Fold: first folding PC
ThinkPad X1 Fold was presented as the first fully functional PC with a foldable OLED display. It’s just one of Lenovo’s many announcements for CES 2020.
ThinkPad X1 Fold, the folding PC presented by Lenovo at CES 2020, is made of different light alloys and carbon fiber and is covered with a leather cover. We are talking about a complete notebook PC with a 13.3-inch foldable OLED display and a weight of less than 1kg. It adapts to the needs of the user by seamlessly switching between different formats, from compact to fully open display.
ThinkPad X1 Fold is just one example of Lenovo’s commitment to foldable formats, as the recently announced Motorola Razr demonstrates. The always-connected PC is based on Intel Core processors with Intel Hybrid technology and will initially be available with Windows 10 in mid-2020, while later, it will also arrive with Windows 10X.
This innovative device is mainly aimed at those users who frequently switch from phone to tablet and laptop. In landscape mode with the stand built into the case, ThinkPad X1 Fold allows you to review and annotate the latest presentation or use the Bluetooth Mini Fold keyboard. Once closed, the keyboard is stored and reloaded wirelessly within the system and fixed with magnets.
In portrait orientation, users can take notes or draw using the Active Pen digital pen or scroll and sign a legal document. When open, the completely flat screen can be used as a tablet, while slightly folded, it allows reading like a book, for example, on an airplane seat.
This configuration also allows you to use two displays to facilitate some multitasking activities, such as participating in a video call on the upper screen while reviewing or editing a presentation on the lower screen. It will also be possible to compare two documents, one on top of the other or take notes on one screen while following a conference on the other. These modes can be performed vertically or horizontally.
At the same time, by connecting a standard-sized keyboard and mouse and a second display via USB Type-C, it is possible to place the device in the optional ThinkPad X1 folding stand in portrait or landscape mode.
The ThinkPad development team has been working on this hinge for some time, which was made in collaboration with Intel. It is a hinge with electrical connectivity equipped with a multi-link mechanism capable of supporting stress during bending operations. The hinge mechanism, combined with the use of light alloys and carbon-fiber reinforcements, optimizes the viewing experience when the device is open.
This is not Lenovo’s only announcement at CES. Among other products, we have Yoga 5G, described as the first 5G PC. It is an ultra-portable 2-in-1 laptop based on the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8cx 5G Compute platform. It provides high-speed 5G connectivity through 5G service providers, both on the move and the home Wi-Fi connection. This Yoga family computer weighs only 1.3 kg and is equipped with a 14-inch Full HD IPS touch display with a brightness of 400 nits and ultra-thin bezels.
ThinkBook Plus is instead of a laptop equipped with an e-ink display integrated with the lid that improves productivity and concentration. The display can be used to create illustrations or take notes with the Precision Pen and allow you to receive the most important notifications even when the lid is closed. This device is a new type of laptop that features innovative features helping users maximize their multitasking efficiency.
The new Lenovo IdeaPad Duet Chromebook features a minimalist design and an optional USI stylus that allows you to write and draw intuitively and a detachable 2-in-1 format that combines simplicity and portability in the same device.
