Linux Mint 18.2 ” Sonya ” Released: evolution without revolutions
The Linux Mint project announced the release of version 18.2 of the same distribution. The code name ” Sonya ” does not bring revolutions, but small refinements and improvements to the experience already present.
There is finally available Linux Mint 18.2 ” Sonya “, the latest version of the Linux distribution note founded by Clement Lefebvre. All variants (Cinnamon, MATE, KDE and XFCE) were released both in the form of ISO and as updates for those who already had Linux Mint 18.1 installed.
As already done in previous releases, Linux Mint 18.2 continues to rely on Ubuntu 16.04 LTS and no changes are made to the core packages. However, desktop environments, in particular, Cinnamon, are updated, moving to version 3.4, and MATE, which came to version 1.18.
In both cases, we mainly find refinements with few substantive novelties, such as the new Bluetooth Blueberry handler and new features introduced in the Xapps suite of applications. Also new to the update manager, which now ranks the updates better and gives more room for the kernel update.
What’s new is the abandonment of the MDM manager in favor of LightDM, used by Ubuntu and replaced by GDM. The Linux Mint team created a fork of the unity-greeter project called slick-greeter, almost identical to the original project and with a few options.
The KDE version looks at the introduction of Plasma 5.8, while XFCE does not see big news except for updating the Whisker menu and the XFWM4 window manager.
Linux Mint 18.2 will be followed by version 18.3 this fall, which will be the last of branch 18 before switching to branch 19 with the release of Ubuntu 18.04 LTS. You can read more details about new releases on the project blog and download the ISO from its site.
