McAfee detects access to airport systems on the dark web
For sale only $10. The name of the airport is not known for security reasons, but it is an important international hub. Involved also other governmental realities and the health world.
During a research activity aimed at identifying the exchange markets on the dark web, researchers at McAfee’s Advanced Threat Research group came across a series of ” stores ” that sell access to the information systems of various companies and organizations.
Among these, the group has identified access to the systems of an important international airport, sold for just $10. According to McAfee researchers, it appears that what is sold from the store found on the dark web can allow access to airport security systems as well as transit, surveillance and automation.
In particular, access to the Remote Desktop Protocol of the airport is sold, which allows employees to remotely connect to certain stations in the airport network. ” This access could allow criminals to do pretty much anything they want, such as creating false internal security alerts, sending spam, stealing data and credentials, undermining cryptocurrency and conducting ransomware attacks. ”
McAfee also stated that at the store, it was possible to find other accesses to various government systems and to many health institutions. For safety reasons, the name of the airport or of the other entities identified has not obviously been announced, but the interested parties have all been contacted and informed.
” Governments and companies spend billions of dollars a year on securing the systems we trust, but even a state-of-the-art solution cannot guarantee security if a service port is left open or closed with a simple padlock ” McAfee researchers commented.
