Microsoft: Andromeda OS is the future of Windows 10 Mobile

Andromeda OS could be the operating system integrated on Surface Phone, all based on mobile and on the needs of mobility.

The future of Windows 10 Mobile is called Andromeda OS. In that of Redmond is working hard on this project, with the aim of bringing it into the hands of users in 2018 or even later. Apparently according to the latest rumors leaked when there will be Andromeda OS the source code and the SDKs of Windows 10 Mobile will be decommissioned. The current Microsoft Mobile OS will no longer be updated, and older Windows Phone devices will remain with Redstone 2.

Microsoft has already said on several occasions that it does not need a specific version of its operating system to work on mobile platforms. The development of Andromeda OS is in the name of the unification of the experience between multiple Windows 10 devices of different types. Microsoft wants to produce a ” universal ” experience, a platform that does not show significant differences in terms of how to use them, except those related to the input devices used.

Crucial point of Andromeda OS is the lightness, in addition to the possibility of scaling according to the needs of the device in use. It can work on mobile, desktop and even on wearables, without forcing Microsoft to develop specific versions of the operating system. It is clear that the features designed for a smartwatch will not work on a desktop, and vice versa, but Microsoft can simply block them without requiring an ad-hoc code writing.

However, within the development work of the new project, Microsoft intends not to make the mistakes of the past. Andromeda OS will not touch the key features of the operating system, leaving the desktop experience unchanged and making only the changes where they are needed. The first event of Andromeda OS will probably be on Surface Phone, as the project is mainly based on the needs of the mobile environment.

Microsoft will progressively focus on the other product categories, but mobile – currently almost set aside in a less prestigious position – remains the main focus of the platform. The news will be perceptible even in the nomenclature used: Surface Phone will not be promoted as a Windows 10 Mobile device, nor as ” Andromeda “, but simply as Windows 10 in the name of the One Windows Vision to date not fully completed.

OneCore will be the basis of the project, together with the Universal Windows Platform. This does not mean that the next Redmond smartphone will be able to run the traditional Win32 apps, but that the entire user experience will be unified and ” modular “. Microsoft is testing Andromeda OS internally and at the time of writing, according to the sources, it is at an embryonic stage of development. For the official announcement, we could, in short, wait a few more months.
