Microsoft announces: Switch to iOS and Android, Windows 10 Mobile is dead
Support for Windows 10 Mobile will end by the end of the year, and Microsoft recommends its users to switch to competing platforms that are still supported.
Windows 10 Mobile will receive its latest patches and the latest security updates on December 10, 2019: since then Microsoft will end up writing code regarding its mobile platform, and then it will cease its development on a definitive basis.
This is an expected novelty, given that the latest addition of some importance on the SO dates back to October 2017, when Windows 10 Mobile reached the build 1709. At this point was interrupted the development of new features, with the company that has since released only the necessary security updates and bug fixes, and not even on a regular basis. What will be discontinued next December will be, to be precise, the development of Patch Tuesday updates.
Windows 10 Mobile will not end up running, of course, suddenly, and even some online features will continue to be active for some time: for example: online backup of settings and applications will work for three months after the last security patch, then up to March 10, 2020, and uploads of photos and the ability to restore devices from online backups will work for 12 months from the end of support, then until December 2020.
On the guidelines issued to consumers by Microsoft, we read the advice to ” upgrade to a supported Android or iOS device “, using the Microsoft applications that have been relied so far on the competition platforms. As for the mere use of Microsoft Android apps, it may be the best choice, since it is a more flexible OS, with a deeper integration and a higher number of features.
But those who had been burned by the premature end of the support on Windows 10 Mobile can find in iOS the best answer to their fears. Apple’s operating system allows longer-term support even for devices that can be considered obsolete, with expected updates even for terminals that have a few years too much on their shoulders.
