Seagate released a new family of hard drives designed for use in NAS, using size 3.5-inch SATA interface. Available in various capacities, stands out the top model from well 8 TB.
News from Seagate Technology, which presented a new series of hard drives designed for use in NAS and RAID configurations. Under the name of NAS HDD lies then a particular series, which puts the reliability among the primary needs to be satisfied. The form factor is 3.5 inches, while the interface is widespread in the SATA 6 Gbps version.
The whole family is composed of models with capacities of 1 TB, 2 TB, 3 TB, 4 TB, 6 TB and 8 TB well, where the latter is a novelty compared with the number of previous generation. To achieve a similar capacity Seagate has packed six dishes each 1.33 TB, using PMR technology, Perpendicular Magnetic Recording.
Unlike other models, in contrast, the rotation speed is high, 7200 rpm, a feature that also distinguishes the unit from 6 TB. The cuts remain on the lower consolidated rotation speed of 5900 rpm (at least for this type of discs), more conservative, even if the entire series boasts the same warranty period fixed at 3 years.
These performances by Seagate speak of peaks from 216 MB/s, without indicating whether read or write. The declared consumption settles on 9 W in full operation and 7.2 W idle (6 TB and 8 TB models), gradually descending with capacities (4.8 – 3.95 W operating and idle 3.6 – 2.5 W from 4 TB down).
Solutions such as these are increasingly also used by home users, as well as in small and medium business, because the demand for space is growing rapidly, especially if you have hobbies like photography or video shooting. Still missing information on pricing.
