New AMD G family of solutions for embedded systems

AMD expands the range of proposals aimed at embedded systems, making available new models with architecture Excavator and reconfirming the support and market availability for 10 years.

In conjunction with the Embedded World AMD announced new proposals to its family of SoC solutions for their type of x86 embedded systems. The first change concerns the solutions of the G family, reached the third generation and are characterized by the use of core-based architecture Excavator.

The SoCs are distinguished themselves in two families: the one indicated by letter I integrate two CPU cores of Excavator family combined with GPU compute with 4 units (256 stream processors and Radeon cores); The dual-channel memory controller supports DDR3 or DDR4 depending on the implementation, while the final TDP is configurable between 12 and 15 Watts speaking on the operating frequency and the power-supply specifications.

The proposals of the J family instead, are characterized by TDP from 6 up to 10 Watt variable, and for this reason integrated next to the two CPU cores Excavator family of a GPU with a total of 128 processors streaming.

All this is combined with a single-channel memory controller type, always with the option to use DDR3 or DDR4. The products of the families I and J using FP4 interface, the same proposals ” Merlin Falcon ” made by AMD in the autumn of 2015, and belonging to the R-series.

AMD G Series

Last novelty presented by Embedded World AMD is the range of proposals from the G series of the package FT3 of the LX family, for which the American company offers the Jaguar family core with a TDP of 6 to 15 Watt depending on the configuration.

For these solutions, the combination is with a single channel DDR3 memory type, and it lacks support for AMD Secure. Target of reference are the embedded systems that typically use, for cost considerations, proposals based on the ARM architecture and which in this case can benefit of the passage to that x86 to a price level that is comparable.

In the embedded market, the proposed long-term support is among the most requested by the partners technical characteristics. With these products, AMD confirms the choice to assure availability and support on the market for the next 10 years.
