New Sony RX0 II, now with adjustable display (also underwater) and 4K video
There are two major new features of the new Sony RX0 II model. The most obvious even externally is the presence of an adjustable and tilting display, which allows framing even from difficult angles. The other novelty lies inside and is the ability to record 4K video directly on the memory card.
Sony RX0 is one of the strangest (and least understood) products created by Sony in recent years in the photographic field. It has the appearance of an action camera, but hides inside it a sensor larger than average, in 1″ format, and offers a 24mm equivalent F4 Zeiss Tessar T* lens.
Presented in 2017 at the IFA in Berlin it aimed at become a reference point for professional filming in difficult conditions and in those situations where any video camera, video camera or camera is too big RX0 can also operate underwater, in the presence of rain, in dusty or sandy environments. in situations where there is a risk of bumps or falls.
Today Sony has introduced the new RX0 II, which incorporates the philosophy and the forms of the first model, but introduces interesting novelties. The Zeiss Tessar T */24mm F4 fixed optic and the stacked Exmor RS CMOS inch-sized sensor with 15.3 megapixels of effective resolution are still at a standstill, offering electronic shutter speeds up to 1/32,000 of a second without rolling shutter effect and burst shooting up to 16 frames per second.
There are two main new features of the new model. The most obvious even externally is the presence of an adjustable and tilting display, which allows framing even from difficult angles and can help in adjusting the framing when the camera is mounted in unusual positions.
The other novelty resides inside, and it is the possibility to record 4K QFHD 3,840 × 2,160 pixel video directly on the memory card, thanks to the work of the BIONZ X processor that manages the oversampling 1,7x of the reading of the whole surface of the sensor.
The function requires cards capable of supporting 100Mbps data streams. Sony has also introduced new video stabilization algorithms, which should ensure smooth shooting. We also find the functions of Advanced Eye AF, for perfect focusing in the presence of faces.
The small photo/video camera allows shooting in Full HD 1,920×1,080 up to 1,000 fps, for slow motion. On the HDMI output, it is instead possible to record a clean and uncompressed 4K stream, for professional applications. In the latter case, we also find the possibility to register with the S-Log2 profile and to have the timecode function available.
Of course,Sony RX0 II can be controlled wirelessly with the Sony Imaging Edge Mobile app: in particular, up to 5 cameras can be controlled directly from the smartphone at the same time. With the firmware update planned for the summer it will be possible to control up ton50 cameras via wireless access points, while the new RX0 is compatible with the CCB-WD1 Camera Control Box system that can manage up to 100 RX0 by cable.
Sony RX0 II can be used without housing with extended screen and rotated up to 10 meters deep under water and resists falls from heights up to 2 meters.
