Nikon Coolpix P1000: 125x 3000mm optical equivalent and 12000mm digital zoom
For those who are not satisfied, Nikon presented a worthy heir to the Coolpix P900, which had only a 2000mm equivalent zoom. The new Coolpix brings the equivalent focal length in optical mode to 3000mm, in addition to introducing the RAW shots.
Do compact cameras and bridges still make sense, with really affordable SLRs? The answer is yes, if you think of excellent compromises or special needs, as well as of course the personal taste that can make you lean for one choice over the other without necessarily being 100% rational.
Surely interesting is the new Nikon Coolpix P1000, which really points to the exceptional optical zoom. The plate value, compared to the full size, is 3000mm. A value that can be extended in digital to 6000mm and even to 12000mm, obviously paying a pledge in terms of quality. The previous version, Nikon Coolpix P900, stopped at 2000mm. The new born boasts an equivalent excursion of 28-3000mm, with relative values of maximum opening F2.8-8.
Considering the focal F8 is not bad at all as the maximum brightness value. Nikon claimed to have made this camera responding to a specific need, bringing to the limit the optical structure in order to photograph the moon, birds (for these, there are dedicated programs) and ” wildlife ” in general.
The purists of the image will have something to say, made skeptical by the sensor 1/2.3″ from 16 Mpixel with ISO 100-6400 extension, but we invite to a careful reflection. Of course course a sensor from SLR, APS-C / DX or Full Frame, guarantees a better performance, but if we talk about the cost of a 400mm telephoto lens for reflex or mirrorless cameras, the talk closes immediately here, currently the cheapest way to have such astronomical focal points (in this case also literally ) is precisely to shift the focus on this type of cameras.
Finally, Nikon has also introduced support for RAW shots, not foreseen on the previous model. Other information concerns the maximum burst, 7fps, although limited to 7 shots. Expected support for videos in 4K at 30p or 25p, as well as the fully adjustable display at the back and of course the completely manual mode. Connectivity also includes Wi-Fi and Bluetooth.
The filters that can be used are those of 77mm, while we give for a very efficient optical stabilization system, without which nothing would be done at 3000mm. The weight is important, as can be expected with all that glass inside: 1.4Kg, but also in this case speaks of fractions with respect to the machine group more than a reflex camera.
