Nikon unveils its new flagship full frame SLR: Here is Nikon D6

Nikon chooses a very traditional approach for its new full-frame flagship reflex: the new Nikon D6 does not upset the previous model and introduces some novelties that will be interesting to evaluate on the field, such as a renewed autofocus sector.

2020, the year of the Olympics in Japan: the announcement of a new flagship SLR could not be missing also from Nikon. Today the Japanese manufacturer has announced the long-awaited Nikon D6, which collects the legacy of the previous Nikon D5, with some improvements, but without distorting the design and essence. We are therefore faced with a new fairly traditional sporty full-frame SLR.

At the base of the image recovery system, we find a 20.8 megapixel CMOS sensor in FX-format, characterized by the same resolution as the previous model, but now supported by the latest Expeed 6 processor.

Now the burst shooting with a mechanical shutter can reach 14 fps, two more than the D5 (with E-type optics, the most recent equipped with electromagnetic iris control). Compared to the previous model, which shot at 3 fps in silent mode, now the cadence of the burst with electronic shutter rises to 10.5 frames per second.

By limiting the resolution to 8 megapixels (about the frame size of 4K videos), it is possible to shoot at 30 fps, going up to 60 fps at 2 megapixels. The native sensitivity range is from 100 to 102,400 ISO, while in expansion mode, it is possible to go up to the incredible ISO value of 3.2 million.

Great changes have affected the autofocus system, which sees the focus points drop from 153 to 105, with a new triple-sensor arrangement technology, which increases the density of the focus points by a factor of 1.6x. Also, all 105 points are now user selectable.

The central focus point declares a sensitivity of -4.5EV, while all the others go up to -4EV; 15 of the central AF points can be used with F8 lenses.

Few evolutions in the video field, with 4K movies at 30p: Nikon has added the ability to save in MP4 and the focus peaking for focusing. Nikon D6 abandons the Compact Flash format and offers a dual XQD/CFExpress slot.

At the level of connections, in addition to Wi-Fi (2.4 GHz and 5 GHz) and Bluetooth, we now also find the integrated GPS, also the RJ-45 Ethernet connector now allows you to carry data with a bandwidth greater than 15%. The camera has lost weight, with a weight that goes from 1440 grams to 1405 grams.

It will then be necessary to evaluate its effectiveness in the field (autofocus), but looking at the technical specifications it seems that at this renewal round of Canon flagships, it was more courageous, placing it as a real bridge between the reflex and the mirrorless world, also thanks to the sensor with Dual Pixel CMOS AF, which allows effective use even with the mirror raised.
