The portrait mode on Google Pixel 4 is the most advanced of those available in the Google smartphone range. The company explained on its blog some of the processes that are used to create the images.

Some time ago, we wrote about how Google Pixel 4 can be used for astrophotography thanks to some measures by the manufacturer. Now, always the Mountain View company has created an article on its blog to explain how a portrait mode works.

Google Pixel 4 - Portrait mode

With users’ growing passion for selfies, portrait mode has taken central role in-camera capabilities. And obviously, Google Pixel 4 could not fail to have an advanced one.

Thanks to calculations and artificial intelligence, it is possible to create a more or less pronounced bokeh effect even on cheap smartphones, with results that can vary. From Google Pixel 2, there have been many steps forward, also considering that the latter had only one camera and used dual-pixel technology to calculate the distance of the subject.

In the latest Google Pixel 4, two cameras can be used, dual-pixel AF technology and artificial intelligence to create increasingly complex portrait mode. One of the strong points of the new smartphone is the two cameras, which are spaced by 13 mm allowing you to overcome some limits of dual-pixel technology.

Despite everything, thanks to the dual-pixel technology, it is possible to have more precise and correct information on the area between the arm and torso of the subject being framed. Instead, dual cameras work to capture background and terrain information. In this case, machine learning is used for the analysis of these data.

According to the scheme published by the company, Google Pixel 4 collects the dual-pixel data and processes them, collects those of the two cameras and processes them, and finally with a decoder shared between the two analyzes to arrive at the final result.

To further improve the aesthetics of photography, an algorithm for HDR and tone mapping is also applied. This allows you to improve the final result even in the presence of lights or other bright elements in the background.
