Raspberry Pi, a new 12 megapixel camera board with interchangeable lenses
The Raspberry Pi Foundation has presented a new photographic module that aims to bring maker and hobbyist projects to a new level of quality and flexibility. Raspberry Pi High-Quality Camera can be purchased for $50.
The Raspberry Pi Foundation has presented ” Raspberry Pi High-Quality Camera, ” a new ” camera board ” that promises to offer makers and hobbyists significantly better photographic abilities than the previous proposals.
The new solution is based on a 12.3 megapixel backlit Sony IMX477 sensor with 1.55-micron pixels. It is not the first official camera board, but the previous solutions used smaller sensors with lower resolution and were based on fixed-focus lenses.
The new High-Quality Camera, on the other hand, supports interchangeable C and CS-mount lenses and offers the possibility to adjust the focus. The first available options, which can be purchased through sectioned resellers, include 6mm CS-mount lenses ($25) and 16mm C-mount lenses ($50).
The board has a CS connection, but it is also accompanied by a C-mount adapter. This means that you can easily connect a wide range of lenses through third-party solutions. The Raspberry Pi Foundation has published some explanatory photos, even a little bizarre.
The new High-Quality Camera is compatible with all Raspberry Pi from 1 Model B version onwards, and the previous 8-megapixel module will remain on sale. The new solution (which will remain in production until January 2027) can be purchased for $50. Finally, we point out that the foundation has made available a free PDF with explanations and ideas on how to exploit a camera board like this.
