Let us briefly recall that, after the acquisition of Pentax by Ricoh, it has put its mark on every compact previously branded Pentax, leaving unchanged instead SLR cameras. This explains why the Ricoh then presents the compact rugged underwater with a lot of acronyms that recall those of the Pentax family. We are talking about the model WG-4 and WG-4 GPS and WG-20. We begin to describe the first two models, differentiated only by the adoption or otherwise of the GPS module.
It is the renowned high-end models range WG, able to offer a watertight seal above average (you cannot stand in water up to 2 hours to 14 feet deep) as well as resistance to fall from heights of up to two meters and perfect operation even at -10 ° C.
The design draws much that of previous models, but worth mentioning is the optical unit mounted in series: the focal length is that of a 25-100mm with reference to the full-size, with the excellent maximum aperture of F2.0 to the focal lens, which reaches F4.9 to the more extended.
The back-illuminated CMOS image sensor is 16 megapixels, able to go to ISO 6400, but has improved dramatically the focus in macro mode, which also benefits from 6 illuminators built into the camera. Obviously, this an image stabilizer, as well as automation to emphasize the warm colors when you are underwater.
Ricoh WG-20 belongs to the same family, but is offered to an audience that wants to spend less. What has changed compared to the models mentioned above? The integrated sensor is a 14 megapixel CCD, while the resistance is guaranteed up to 10 meters and drops from 1.5 meters. It also changes the optics, a more common 28-140mm equivalent (gains something in magnification, but loses a bit as far as the wide angle), with brightness being a lower F3.5 – F5.5.
Resize the potential in the field of video if the Ricoh WG-4 can shoot at 1080 30p, with the model Ricoh WG-20 is down 30p to 720 maximums. We earn money, at least as reported by DPReview, missing in the press release references in this sense: they are the $199.95. dollars needed to bring the underwater WG-20, while salt respectively $329.95 and $379.95 for the WG-4 and Wg-4 GPS.
