Ryzen Embedded R1102G and R1305G, two new chips for the ” AMD mini PC “
AMD expands the SoC range for the mini PC ecosystem with Ryzen Embedded R1305G and R1102G. The company can also count on new partners such as Sapphire, Kontron and SECO, ready to make mini PCs, motherboards and kits.
At the beginning of December last year, AMD formalized its ” semi-official ” descent in the field of ” Intel NUC-like ” mini PC, announcing the creation of an ecosystem of solutions thanks to a handful of partners. AMD has chosen not to make mini PCs in the first person as Intel does, but allows interested parties to take advantage of the Ryzen Embedded V1000 and R1000 CPU to create what they want most.
The new mini PCs, intended for the most disparate sectors (multimedia, digital signage, industrial sector, etc.), at the moment mainly wink at the enterprise and professional market, where there is actually a demand for compact solutions. It cannot be excluded that this sortie of AMD in the sector may, in the future, be articulated involving the consumer sector more, but for now, there is no news in this sense.
The novelty is that to give more flexibility to partner companies, AMD has announced (here the release) the expansion of the Ryzen Embedded R1000 range with two new proposals. This series of processors was first announced in February of last year, and it is a system on chip in BGA format, not installable on board the AM4 motherboards of Ryzen processors.
The offer is based on the Zen+ architecture, the same as the Ryzen 2000, and on an integrated Vega 3 GPU. The new models respond to the names of Ryzen Embedded R1305G and R1102G. The first is a dual-core processor with active SMT – consequently, it has four logical threads – which operates at 1.5 GHz and can go single-thread up to 2.8 GHz.
The integrated Vega 3 GPU operates at 1 GHz. The TDP stands at 8-10 watts. The R1102G model is instead SMT-free, works at 1.2 – 2.6 GHz, and has a TDP of 6 watts. The integrated GPU does not change compared to the older brother.
Simultaneously with the new solutions, AMD announced the expansion of the partner ecosystem. In the beginning, the Sunnyvale house collected support from ASRock Industrial, EEPD, OnLogic, and Simply NUC, while now Sapphire, Kontron, and SECO are also on board.
Kontron unveiled a new mini-ITX platform, while Symply NUC a new mini PC called Red Oak based on these new processors. Sapphire has created two motherboards called BP-FP5 and NP-FP5, while SECO has a mini PC kit called UDOO BOLT GEAR, which can manage up to four screens in 4K at 60 fps simultaneously.
Recall that in addition to R1000 solutions, AMD offers Ryzen Embedded V1000, processors equipped with Zen 4 cores with SMT (8 threads) and an integrated GPU equipped with a maximum of 11 Compute Units based on Vega architecture.
For this reason, the range extends over a TDP ranging from 6 to 54 watts depending on the configuration. It is also in this case of BGA SoC compatible with the same FP5 platform as the R1000 models.
