Samsung brings AI processing for Premium mobile devices with Exynos 9 Series 9820
The fourth-generation Advanced Pro core and 2.0 Gbps LTE modem makes it possible to enrich mobile experiences, including AR and VR applications.
Samsung Electronics today announced its latest premium application processor (AP), the Exynos 9 Series 9820, equipped for Artificial Intelligence (AI) applications on devices. The new CPU is equipped with a LTE Advanced Pro processor with latest-generation CPUs, 2.0 gigabits per second (Gbps) and an advanced neural processing unit (NPU) to offer new smart experiences to mobile devices.
” As AI services expand and their use is diversified across mobile devices, processors demand more computational capabilities and efficiency, ” said Ben Hur, vice president of System LSI marketing at Samsung Electronics. ” The AI capabilities of the Exynos 9 Series 9820 will provide a new performance dimension in smart devices through an integrated NPU unit, a high-performance fourth-generation custom CPU core, a 2.0 Gbps LTE modem, and enhanced multimedia performance. ”
The Exynos 9820 has a hardware AI accelerator, or NPU, that performs Artificial Intelligence activities about seven times faster than its predecessor. With the NPU, processing related to AI can be performed directly on the device rather than sending the activity to a server, ensuring faster performance and better protection of personal information.
This will allow for a variety of new experiences such as instant camera settings adjustment for a shooting based on the surrounding environment or object recognition to provide information in augmented reality or virtual reality (AR or VR).
With an improved architecture design, the new fourth-generation custom core of the Exynos 9820 offers about 20% improvement in single core performance or 40% in terms of energy efficiency compared to its predecessor that can load data or switch from a application to the other much more quickly. In addition, multi-core performance increased by around 15%.
The new mobile processor incorporates the latest Mali-G76 GPU cores, which offer a 40% performance boost or 35% energy savings, allowing longer playback time of mobile games with intensive graphics or interactive AR applications.
In addition, the LTE-Advanced Pro of the Exynos 9820 offers fast broadband speeds of 2.0 Gbps downlink with 8x transport aggregation (CA) and uplink 316 megabits per second (Mbps). With such speeds, you can download a film in high-definition Full HD (3.7 GB) in about 15 seconds and MMOR games (multiplayer online) massively reproducible with less lag.
With a greater aggregation of carriers than the previous solution, together with the MIMO 4 × 4 scheme (Multiple-Input, Multiple-Output), 256-QAM (Quadrature Amplitude Modulation) and the advanced eLAA (Licensed Assisted Access) technology, the modem offers stability still incredible speed in motion.
For more immersive multimedia experiences, the multi-format codec (MFC) of the Exynos 9820 supports encoding and decoding 4K UHD video at 150 frames per second (fps). MFC also renders 10-bit colors, providing a more accurate representation of colors, offering a wider range of tones and hues. The Exynos 9 Series 9820 is expected to be mass produced by the end of this year.
