The Korean market it two new solid-state drives 2TB, the more capacious designed for the consumer market.
Samsung has announced two new solutions for solid-state storage that could be frightening to the hegemony of mechanical disk. The Koreans have managed to cram than 2 terabytes of storage space in two different models for performance, which will be added to families Samsung SSD 850 PRO and Samsung SSD 850 EVO. Previously, the maximum cut offered by Samsung for the consumer market was one terabyte.
Both new models make use of technology V-NAND (Vertical NAND) owns, now abused by Koreans in the line-up of solid-state drives. This allows to organize the memory cells more effectively than the solutions planar, in which the same cells are arranged ” two-dimensionally ” on the surface of a silicon wafer. In the memoirs ” three-dimensional ” of Samsung, the cells can be stacked to a maximum of 32 levels different.
This allows to reach a density extremely higher for data, guaranteeing at the same time to optimize the production costs compared to a considerable increase of the storage space. Both models support the proprietary TurboWrite, which helps speed up the write speed during data transfers by creating a specific buffer. This mode RAPID, which uses RAM as write cache to improve performance.
RAPID can only be activated through Magician, the management software for SSDs from Samsung, remember that is only available on Windows. Hard work of course on a Mac or Linux-based PCs, but cannot benefit from the specific functionality in these environments.
The new SSD 850 EVO and SSD 850 PRO from 2TB are both enclosed in the same aluminum casing of the predecessors, 7 mm thick and installed in the traditional 2.5-inch bays. The discs use 128 V-chip NAND Samsung 32-layer, each 128Gb, combined with a controller MHX updated to support the new storage capacity and four 4Gb LPDDR3 DRAM chip and 20 nm.
In addition to slightly higher performance, the PRO version will have additional benefits on the EVO. Samsung provides the top of the range for a period of 10 years and 300 terabytes of data written, compared to 5 years and 150 terabytes of model data below. Samsung SSD 850 PRO will of course also a list price higher, amounting to $ 1,000, but even the EVO will be a model for all, with a price of $ 800 in the US market.
New technologies and high-capacity density will soon be offered even in the form-factor mSATA and M.2, then we could soon see those capabilities in the SSD integrated on small desktop and laptop.
