Snappy Ubuntu: Linux platforms for IoT

It’s called Snappy the draft Canonical dedicated to Internet platforms of Thinghs and turns to the world of makers, inventors and enthusiasts. At present there is an active beta program, but by April are expected important news.

With Internet of Thinghs (IoT), we refer to a sector of rapidly changing market: these devices and solutions related to the Web that are often part of our daily lives, but are not necessarily PC, Tablet or traditional device. We find, for example, thermostats for heating and cooling, locks remotely manageable in an intelligent way and in general the solution for the home automation home.

This is just to cite concrete examples and closer to our thinking. But with imagination, you can go much further, towards goals that will be achieved soon. It is in this area that Canonical intends to try, has long been committed to the development of a version of Ubuntu platforms dedicated to IoT.

With the code name of Snappy refers precisely to this project, and for the admission of the Canonical intends to contact the investigators, the maker, for those still able to invent. IoT are also involved in the phenomenon important brands that will be definitely affected by Canonical, but at the present time the main target is different.

There is already a beta-testing program dedicated to Snappy that includes also important groups. We quote for curiosity Open Source Robotics Foundation (OSRF) and Erle Robotics who developed a first prototype drone based operating system Ubuntu.

The hardware requirements needed to Snappy are minimal, they speak of a 600 MHz processor clock, with 128 MB of RAM and the system will use 40 MB leaving the remaining portion of the available applications. Storage is required a quantity of 4GB of flash memory. Snappy Core IoT presents with characteristics very similar to those of the well-known and popular Linux distribution, but is characterized by an innovative and unique approach to update.

$ apt-get update

Ubuntu Core does not use apt-get, see ‘snappy –help’

$ sudo apt-get install docker

Ubuntu Core does not use apt-get, see ‘snappy –help’

Canonical has declared that the system has been developed to ensure the best possible system stability: if an update or a package to be installed and the procedure are not successful until the system is able to leave without ignoring problems any changes.

During the month of April has planned an important issue by Ubuntu. For this, period is expected Ubuntu Linux 15:04 but the company has announced that Snappy will be officially presented in advance of that date.
